Assessment of Mud Crab (scylla Serrata) Resources and Its Culture in the Sundarbans Mangrove Water System.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In both water systems, crabs in all compartments got fattened within 12 days of stocking. In stagnant water system, the highest survival of 100% was achieved in the compartment size of 10" x 10" x 12" and the lowest of 66.66% in the compartment size of 15" x 15" x 12". In flowing water system, the highest survival of 100% was found in the compartment size of 10" x 10" x 12" and the lowest of 50% in the compartment size of 14" x 14" x 12". Among nine compartment sizes, 100% F₁ grade crabs resulted in both stagnant and flowing water systems. After seven days onwards, checking for the development of gonad of the stocked crab was done. The production performance of F₁ grade crabs was highest of 3.47 kg/m² and 3.35 kg/m2 in stagnant and flowing water systems, respectively, in cages with compartment size of 10"x 10"x 12". The survival rate and fattening performance of crabs in compartments of different sizes indicate that the compartment size of 10"x 10"x 12" is the most suitable for fattening of mud crab in both stagnant and flowing water systems.

Objectives:

Development of an appropriate fattening practices of mud crab in cages in open water areas.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in farmer's pond and estuary of the Shibsa river to compare the production performance. The floating bamboo cages was used for this experiment. Each bamboo cage (420 inch x 420 inch x 12 inch) will be subdivided into 60 compartments and fixed with float and anchor in the pond and the river. Area of each compartment was 7 inch x 7 inch x 12 inch (length x width x height) and covered by bamboo made roof. The ponds were remain connected with tidal canal through inlet and outlet for tidal flush. An adult female crab (170-200g) with immature gonad was stocked in each compartment. Slaughterhouse waste, tilapia and other available fish (small white fish, kuchia, flat fish etc.) was supplied as feed @ 5% of total biomass. Each fattening cycle was continued for 2-3 weeks. Physico-chemical parameters (DO, pH, Salinity etc.) were measured weekly. Another experiment was conducted in farmer's ponds/estuary. To determine the area of compartment for each crab, research was conducted using three different sizes of compartment such as, 7 inch x 7 inch x 12 inch, 9 inch x 9 inch x 12 inch and 11 inch x 11 inch x 12 inch, respectively. Single adult non-gravid female crab (204.42±2.58g) was stocked in each compartment. The crab was fed daily with chopped tilapia @ 8% of body weight. Gonad development of crabs was checked daily.

Achievement/Findings:

Mud crab (Scylla serrata) is one of the important commodities, which help the country for earning the foreign currency. This experiment will help to cease the traditional fattening method and teach the people to adopt the scientific method using bamboo made floating cases. It will help the people the coastal region to poverty alleviation through using their inundated water bodies by practicing this technique, Through assessment of mud crab resource, a year round production in Sundarban mangrove region will be known and future policy to minimize the pressure on its natural harvest will be adopted.
