Improvement of Fibre Yield and Its Associated Trials in White Jute.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Under this experiment, 90 F1s and 10 parents were grown at BJRI adjacent field in March 2000 for studies and evaluation the F1 generation. At mature fruit stage 10 plants from each replication were selected at random and data were recorded on plant height, base diameter, bark weight, fiber weight, stick weight, number of nodes, number of branches, number of fruit/plant number of seed /fruit, weight of seeds, plant and 1000 seeds weight. Beside this ten parents were grown at fifteen days interval in March – April as well as in August-September in order to get synchronize flowering, for carrying out adequate pollination expt. A number of crosses were performed among the parents in all possible combinations and pollinated pistil were collected and preserved following 24 hours of pollination with a view to study the nature of pollination including pollen germination and pollen tube growth.

Objectives:

To identify potentially superior combination for high yield and quality fiber.

Methodology:

90 F1s and 10 parents were grown in a randomized complete block design with three replications at BJRI adjacent field in March, 2000. The plots were single rows 3m long, 30cm apart, spaced to a distance of 5-6cm from plant to plant in the rows. Data were recorded on 1. Morphological characters of the F1 plants and the parents at 4-6 weeks age. 2. At mature fruit stage, 10 parents from each replication were selected at random and data were recorded on plant height (m), base diameter (mm), bark weight (g), fiber weight (g), stick weight (g), number of nodes, number of branches, number of fruits/plant, number of seed/fruit, weight of seeds/plant and seeds weight.
