Effect of Twist on Quality of Jute Yarn, Fabrics and Composite Materials

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In the project six samples were collected from Pilot plant division in BJRI and measured different properties (twist per inch, tensile strength, bending modulus, flexural rigidity, abrasion resistance, drape co-efficient). Among the six fabrics it was observed that the performance characteristics of pure jute fabrics showed better than that of other single ply fabrics and pure jute 6 fabrics showed better than other double.

Objectives:

To identify and investigate the effect of twist on the properties of different fabrics.

Methodology:

Sample collection: Different types of fabrics were collected from Pilot Plant and Processing Division, BJRI. Tensile Strength: Tensile strength is defined as the maximum load that a material can support without fracture when being stretched, divided by the original cross sectional area of the material. Tensile strength has dimension of force/unit area. The sample was prepared as 12" length and 2" width. The test was conducted between 8 inches distance. Stiffness: Two specimen warp way and two weft way were tested. To carry out a test the specimen was cut to size with the aid of the template and then both template and specimen were transferred to the platform with the fabric underneath. Both were slowly post forward and the fabric was continued until the tip of the specimen viewed in the mirror cuts both index lines. The bending length was immediately read out from the scale mark opposite a zero line ingraved is the scale of the platform. Drape Co-efficient: Fabric drape is defined as the extent to which a fabric will deform when it is allowed to hang under its own weight. A round size sample of 14 inches dia was cut for the measurement of drape co-efficient. The drape co-efficient was measured by Cusick Drape Tester. Abrasion Resistance: The sample was prepared accordingly and placed in sample holder and then the machine was switched on. After tearing the cloth the number of rotation shown in counter was noted as the result. The WIRA abrasion tester was used for measurement of abrasion resistance.

Achievement/Findings:

Twist is the measure of the spiral turns given to yarn in order to hold the fibres or threads together. Twist of jute yarn was measured where four samples were found single ply and two samples were found double ply. Jute yarn used in sample 1, 5 and 6 were found higher twist per inch but their counts were found different. On the other hand jute yarn of sample 2, 3 and 5 obtained about 3.0-3.5 twist per inches and their yarn counts were found also different. But twist per inch and its tensile strength of sample 6 was also found higher among all double ply. Bending Modulus compared the thickness of material in fabrics of different thickness and the flexural rigidity shows a close relationship between the values and the personal judgment of stiffness. Stiffness both in warp and weft way using data of bending length, flexural rigidity, and bending modulus was calculated. The drape co-efficient values for those samples were found that sample-I was harder than that of other single and double ply samples. Double ply union fabrics appeared to be softer than that of sample I but harder than other single ply fabrics because of their lower drape co-efficient, ie.66%. Among the first four fabrics it was observed that the performance characteristics of pure jute I fabrics showed better than other single ply fabrics. Besides twist, tensile strength, and abrasion resistance of sample six was higher than the sample five. It could be concluded that optimum twist per inches is needed to obtain better qualities of yarn and fabric.
