The experiment was conducted during the year 2005 to 2007 at Yarn & Fabric Production Department, Pilot Plant & Processing Division of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute to study different types of jute bags. Various types of bags using 100% jute fabrics and union fabrics were developed in the Yarn & Fabric Production Department of BJRI and the market feasibility of these bags were surveyed in respect to price. The jute bags are increased in the market due to the following factors, e.g. improved yarn quality, bright and fast color, decorative fabric and attractive design. The jute bags are cost-effective than other types of bags and comparable to the other union and 100% cotton bags. Even it is cheaper than artificial thin leather based products.It is also observed that all 100% jute based products are cheaper than that of the union based products. But the appearance and finishing are comparable and acceptable to that of the other natural fiber based products. 100% jute based products have been found to be the cheapest among all the existing products That is why the demand of jute based in increasing day by day instead of synthetic products.

To  produce different types of jute bags and to survey the market feasibility in respect of cost and to increase the utility of jute goods instead of synthetic products

 

(a) Jute plied yarn of 1/2 spyndle was collected from the experimental spinning mill of BJRI. Then the plied yarns were dyed in the Wet Processing Department. (b) 100% jute stripe fabric was produce in the normal power loom. The union fabrics of different designs were made from the commercial weaving mill. (c) Different types of bags viz. school bag, hand bag, side bag, shopping bag, ladies bag, bottle carrying bag, seminar bag, brief case, ladies parts etc. were produced from different NGO's. All the fabrics were supplied from Yarn and Fabric Production Department. (d) All the above bags/products were evaluated on the basis on the market price comparing with the existing similar other products/bags. The bags were also evaluated on the basis of standard size and appearance of the existing bags in the market.

It is observed that the prices of all the leather based products are the heights of all the existing other products. The prices of artificial thick leather based products are also higher than the artificial thin leather based products. The prices of cotton based products are higher than the artificial thin leather based products but lower than the artificial thick leather based products and 100% leather products. But among the natural types of products viz. cotton, union and 100% jute all the prices of the different products are nearer and comparable to each other. Between these three types of products due to the smooth finishing and appearance of the products. It is also observed that all 100% jute based products are cheaper than that of the union based products. But the appearance and finishing are comparable and acceptable to that of the other natural fiber based products. 100% jute based products have been found to be the cheapest among all the existing products. As natural fiber is environment friendly, the utility of the jute goods are increasing day by day due to its cost-effectiveness.
