Efficacy of Indigenous Plant Extracts in Controlling Leaf Blight (bipolaris Sorokiniana) of Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Experiments were conducted to evaluated the efficacy of some indigenous plant extracts in controlling leaf blight (Bipolaris sorokiniana) of wheat. Primarily 33 plant species were evaluated for their antifungal activity against Bipolaris sorokiniana by an in vitro test. Among them 13 species were found promising and selected for pot and field evaluation against leaf blight disease. Significantly higher grain yield/pot was obtained by treating seeds with allamanda leaf extract.

Objectives:

Laboratory experiment: . Collection of seeds.Collection of botanicals, preparation of extracts and efficacy assessment through poisoned food technique.Determination of seed health status of seeds treated with botanicals following ISTA rules . Recording data on germination and seedling infection of treated seeds following paper towel method. Pot experiment: . Seed treatment with selected botanicals and sowing of seeds in the pot . Recording data on germination and vigor index . Recording data on leaf blight severity yield attributes Field experiment: .Seed treatment with selected botanicals and sowing of seeds in the field .Recording data on leaf blight severity . Recording data on yield and yield contributing parameters.

Achievement/Findings:

The present study showed that number of grains/ear, number of healthy grains/ear, weight of grains/ear and weight of healthy grains/ear were increased by using seeds treated with plant extracts. Kalijira (Nigella sativa) seed extract, garlic (Allium sativum) clove extract, allamanda (Allamanda cathartica) leaf extract and turmeric (Curcuma longa) rhizome extract showed an excellent performance to increase the number and weight of healthy grains.
