Broiler Productivity and Associated Factors of Broiler Farmers in Savar Area

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

100 broiler farmers were interviewed. Farms were divided into 3 categories. Mostly the farmers were in the group of medium and small categories. Average 6.6 batches of broiler were reared by each farm. Maximum farmers (78%) were sold their birds in 30-32 days with average body weight 1200-1500gm, small percentage of farmer i.e. 12% sold in 33-35 days with 1500-1800g body weight and rest of the farmers sold in 36-40 days with more than 2kg. Better FCR was found in medium size farmers (58%), which was 1.83. Most of the small scale farmers used the feed from local feed seller on credit. This group of farmers was forced to sell the chick just after 30 days. During any upcoming festival or occasion the hatchery owners form syndicate to increase the price of day old broiler chicks. Most of the farmers of the study area were not aware about bio-security of poultry farm. Majority of the farmers were not afraid about bird-flue. They have poor knowledge about vaccines’ potency and storage. Winter brooding of chicks was one of the major problems of the farmers. In addition to this farmers were not aware about the impact of light intensity to broiler production.

Objectives:

1. To determine and describe the socio-economic status of broiler farmers

2. To asses the extent of productivity of broiler by the farmers

3. To identify the constraints faced by broiler farmers in improving the broiler productivity

4. To determine the association and influence of selected independent variables on the broiler productivity levels

5. To assess the awareness of farmers about bird and other bio security measures of broiler farms.

Methodology:

A total of 100 farmers were selected randomly from six (6) different villages in Savar upazila, The majority of the farmers were small (500 to 1000) and medium producer (1000 to 2000). Along with the structured interview schedule, the data on independent variables such as age, education, family size, land possession, annual family income, credit need, cosmopolite ness, organizational participation, extension contact, number of batch produces per year, experience on poultry farming, size of farm, investment of farm, annual operational cost etc. were collected. Broiler productivity, management, bio-security and marketing were considered as dependable variables for this research work. Drop out broiler farmers were also interviewed to find out the reason.

Achievement/Findings:

Age: 36% farmers were young, 41% farmers middle aged and the rest 23% were older aged. Level of education: 12% farmers were illiterate followed by 29% had primary education, 35% secondary education, 15% higher secondary education and 9% bachelor or higher level of education. Family size: 45% of the farmers belong to small sized family, 41% medium sized family and the rest 14% big sized family. Farm size: The broiler farm size ranged from 500-4000, the mean being 1575. Annual income: The range of annual income of the farmers of the study area was 42000/- to 150000/- with an average of 113000/- Taka. Farming knowledge: 12% farmers had no knowledge about farming, first time they started their farming. 25, 50 and 13% farmers had little, moderate and good knowledge, respectively. Number of batch per year: Average 6.6 batches were reared by the farmers in research area. Marketing age and final weight: Maximum farmers (78%) were sold their birds in 30-32 days with 1200-1500 g body weight, 12% farmers sold in 33-35 days with 1500-1800g body weight and rest of the farmers sold in 36-40 days with more than 2kg.
