A pedal-operated saw type ginning machine was designed, constructed and developed with locally available materials in the workshop of Farm Machinery and Postharvest Process Engineering Division, BARI, Bangladesh. Test was made with seed cotton (Carpus tula) and its performance was found satisfactory. The ginning efficiency of the machine was 95%. The average capacity was 3 kg/hr.

1. Develop a low cost pedal-operated cotton ginning machine.

2. Evaluate the performance of the ginning machine relating to ginning capacity and efficiency.

Construction of Machine: A saw type pedal ginning machine was designed and developed to be operated by one man. The rotating circular saws were to be driven by larger sprocket of diameter 203 mm which was connected to a small sprocket of diameter 76 mm fitted on the extended end of brush shaft (17 mm dia), through roller chain. The power transmission was accomplished in such a way that the saws and brush were to be rotated in the same direction through an idle sprocket. The larger sprocket was mounted on the extended end of the saw shaft, fitted on the M. S. sheet body and was operated at 45 rpm. Pedal ginning machine was constructed at Farm Machinery and Postharvest Process Engineering Division, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, having the following components. 1. Angle frame and body; 2. circular saw assembly; 3. brushing mechanism; 4. power transmission mechanism; 5. bi-cycle pedal arrangement; 6. seating arrangement.

Circular saw assembly: The saw ginning machine was constructed with 11 circular saws. The saws were fitted to the shaft (17 mm dia.) at a 20 mm spacing. The essential part of the saw gin was a set of circular saws which revolved rapidly with a projected portion through a narrow slit between the ribs and this pull makes separation of cotton lint from seeds, as the seeds are larger these could not pass through the narrow slit. The seed free cotton lint caught by the saw was separated by the brush and collected in a wire net box. The box was placed below the brush and saw shaft inside the angle frame.

Frame and body: The frame of the pedal ginning machine was fabricated with 38 mm angle bar. Length, width, and height was 500 mm, 350 mm, and 660 mm, respectively. The mild steel sheets were placed at 250 mm apart vertically on the angle frame and were fitted by nuts-bolts. The saw shaft, brush shaft, and idle shaft were fitted to the plates by means of ball bearing. To prevent the upward flow of the cotton, a cover was placed on the top and at the rear end of the machine. The box was placed at the bottom of the machine inside the angle frame.

Power transmission mechanism: The larger sprocket wheel was operated by bi-cycle pedal and the power was transmitted through chain and free wheel to saw and brush. The sprockets were fitted to the extended end of the saw shaft, brush shaft, idle shaft, and pedal assembly. The speed of the brush varied by changing the diameter of the smaller sprocket. Through the above arrangement, a speed of 45 rpm was achieved. The idle sprocket arrangement was made to maintain same direction of rotation of saw and brush. On an average, operator produced 45 rpm by normal pedaling of this machine.

Test procedure: The testing was carried out at the research workshop of Farm Machinery and Postharvest Process Engineering Division, BARI. The performance of the ginning machine was evaluated in terms of capacity and efficiency. The performance parameters were calculated as per RNAM test code (1983). Seeds were separated from raw cotton by operating the machine two hours continuously taking 10 minutes' rest intermittently and the operation was repeated thrice.

i) The fabrication and operation of this machine is very simple and the local technicians can fabricate it easily.

ii) The unit material cost of this machine is taka 3500.

iii) The capacity and efficiency of this machine are 3 kg/hr. and 95%, respectively.

iv) Pedal ginning machine would be the substitute for traditional system and would reduce the labour requirement.
