Studies on the Physical Properties of Jute Cotton Blended Curtains and 100% Cotton Curtain.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out in the laboratory of Yarn and Fabric Production Department and JTPDC of BJRI in 2007 to 2008.All the properties of blended and 100% cotton fabric 50:501/Jute:Cotton blended curtain fabric is parallel to the 100% medium quality cotton curtain fabric and batter than 100% low quality cotton curtain fabric. It has become possible due to balance blend ratio (50:50/Jute:Cotton) in the yarn. By analyzing all the properties and price,50:50/Jute:Cotton blended curtain shows by far the best properties than the other blended and 100% cotton curtains.

Objectives:

(i)Trial production of 200 yards jute-cotton blended fabric and printing of the above fabrics for curtain

(ii)To produce jute-cotton blended curtain and 100%cotton curtain and feasibility study of these products.

Methodology:

Jute was stapled according to the required length. The fibers were chemically modified and softened in the chemical modification chamber in JTPDC.Then the modified fibers were dried. (ii)Chemically modified soften jute fibers were bleached with cotton fibers in the blow room section .Blended yarns of required count were prepared in the rotor spinning machine from the Commercial Spinning Mills. (iii)Jute cotton blended curtain fabrics were produced in the normal power loom of BJRI. 100% cotton curtains were collected from market. (iv)The blended curtain fabrics were printed from the commercial mills and prepared for market evaluation.

Achievement/Findings:

It is seen that weight per square meter of blended curtain has decreased a lot after washing. In the case of two types of 100% cotton curtain fabrics, it is observed that wt./sq.m of 100% cotton curtain (Tk.60/m) before and after wash was 162 gm and 155.2 gm. This wt. is lower than the wt. of each type of bended fabrics. On the other hand wt. of 100% cotton curtain (Tk.95/m) before and after wash is 252 gm and 248 gm. This wt. is higher than the wt of another type of 1005 cotton curtain fabric. It is also seen that the wt. of costly 100% cotton curtain fabric was higher than the wt. of other three type of blended curtain fabrics. So, there was a loss of wt. after washing for each type of curtain fabric. This was happened due to loss of starch which is used in warp yarn. Here, the warp wise strength has also decreased after washing for all blended curtains. But strength of the curtain is not as important as wt. of thee curtain. As curtain has to be washed after certain use, so, loss of strength may be a considerable point also. Here, jute: cotton/50:50 blended curtain shows the higher strength than that of other two types of blended curtains. On the other hand 50:50/jute: cotton blended curtain has shown the similar bending length of 100% cotton curtain.
