Multilocation Trial of Smooth Mesta Samu'93 (hibiscus Sabdariffa L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The line SAMU’93 was tested at seven locations namely, Manikgonj, Faridpur,Kishoregonj, Rangpur, Chandina, Monirampur and potuakhali along with recommended variety HS-24 as check. The study showed that SAMU’93 gave 3.43 t/ha fibre and HS-24 gave 3.51 t/ha at Monirampur sub station. SAMU’93 could not out yielded than the control variety at any stations. Although, the fibre yield of SAMU’93 is lower than the control variety HS-24, it has desirable characters over the control such as, SAMU’93 showed smooth and early maturing characters than the control variety HS-24. The farmers would like to cultivate mesta as it would be prickle free, easy handling and high biomass in poor land.

Objectives:

Evaluation of selected genetic resources of Mesta in respect of smoothness, earliness and high biomass production at preliminary and advanced yield trial levels.

Methodology:

Due to presence of prickles or pubescence on stems and bristles on calyx and pericarps of Mesta, the growers show little interest of Mesta cultivation. A new line of Mesta named SAMU'93 having pricke and bristle free was isolated from the farmer's field of Khankhanapur, Rajbari in 1993. The experiments were carried out at Manikganj, Faridpur, Kishroeganj, Chandina, Rangpur, Patuakhali and Monirampur along with recommended variety HS-24 as check in a Randomized Complete Block Design with four replication having unit plot size of 2.1m x 2.0m= 4.2 sq. m. The seeds were sown in mid April and harvested in Mid-August. Data were recorded on, date of sowing, germination, plant population at final thinning and harvest time, plant height, base diameter, green weight with leaves, green weight without leaves, fibre weight and stick weight.
