Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A multi-crop exploration and collection was conducted on chilli and minor cereals germplasm of 11 districts in Bangladesh under AFACI-PGR project. One hundred and twenty seven germplasm of chilli, three foxtail millet and one buckwheat germplasm were collected from Thakurgong, Joypurhat, Jamalpur, Faridpur, Gazipur, Kishoreganj, Khagrachari, Patuakhali, Barguna, Barisal and Jhalkhati.The germplasm were collected from field, threshing floor, garden, farm store, market etc. The status of the sample was mostly land races. The sample was collected as seeds and fruits from individual plant or population. Passport information was recorded.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Six expeditions were made for collection of chilli, (Capsicum frutiscens L.) minor cereals (foxtail millet Setaria italica (L.) P. Beauv.), buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) germplasm from different regions of Bangladesh. Six teams such as ASIR, AMS, AH, RT, RM and RT were formed comprising 2-4 members in each team. The team members visited different Upazillas of Khagrachari, Jamalpur and southern districts like Barisal, Patuakhali, Jhalokathi, Barguna and Faridpur. The teams were equipped with GPS, compass, digital cameras, hand lens, envelop, knife, scissors, drying sheet, pencil, stapler etc. The general principle in germplasm sampling was to randomly collect a bulk sample from the site by harvesting randomly panicles or fruits of a number of plants from several spots in the site. The frequency of sampling (number of sample per site) and the size of each sample were done for maintaining the genetic diversity and gene flow within a taxon and the agro-ecology of the site following the methods described by Arora (1991). Collector’s name, number and date were recorded during collection. Name of crop species with English, bangla and local name were recorded. Name of donor with ethnic group, village, union, thana, district, altitude, latitude and longitude were noted. Type of soil, topography, sample status, sample source, habitat, frequency, type of materials, cultural practices, season, sole or mixed with, sample type, sampling method, insect and disease, agronomic score and plant characteristics were noted. A ‘Passport Data Form’ having 32 passport information was filled up during germplasm collection.

Achievement/Findings:

One hundred twenty seven germplasm of chilli, 3 foxtail millet and one each of buckwheat, mungbean and groundnut were collected from 11 districts in Bangladesh under AFACI-PGR project during 2012-13. The maximum of 39 germplasm of chilli was collected from Khagrachhari, followed by 25 (Jamalpur), 24 (Patuakhali), 13 (Barisal), 10 (Joypurhut), 7 (Gazipur), 6 (Barguna) and one germplasm each from Faridpur, Jhalkhati, and Kishoreganj. Three foxtail millet germplasm were collected from Thakurgoan, Barisal and Khagrachari. One buckwheat germplasm was collected from Thakurgoan. One each of mungbean and ground nut was collected from Patuakhali. Collector’s number, month of collection, name of village, union, upazilla, district and donor’s name of individual germplasm were recorded.The collected germplasm will be regenerated, characterized and evaluated and conserved for future utilization. Exploration and collection of germplasm is a mandatory work of PGRC. The programme will be continued.
