Sylhet Sadar Upazila lies in the middle part of Sylhet district. It lies under AEZ29 (Northern and Eastern Hills), AEZ 22 (Northern and Eastern Piedmont Plain) and AEZ 20 (Surma-Kusiyara Floodplain). In this Upazila land type in Hills is highland; in Piedmont Plain major land type medium highland and in Surma-Kusiyara Floodplain major land type is medium highland followed by medium lowland. Major textural class identified was clay loam (47%) followed by loam (18%). Three soil groups namely Khadimnagar and Ramgar were identified in Hills. Three soil groups namely Bijipur, Pritimpasa and Manu were identified in Piedmont. Five soil groups namely Balaganj, Goainghat, Fagu, Terchibari and Hakaluki were identified in Floodplains. According to local agro-ecology T.Aman (modern, local), Boro (modern, local), Deep water aman, T.Aus (modern, local), Broadcast Aus, Sugarcane, Rabi cotton, Rabi maize, Chickpea, Lentil, Mustard, Rabi Soybean, Rabi Groundnut, Potato, Rabi vegetables, Chilli, Tomato, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Tea, Mango, Jackfruit, Lemon, Cocoanut and Betelnut are suitable while Kharif Maize, Kharif Groundnut, Millet, Mungbean, Blackgram, Watermelon, Kharif Chilli, Onion, Zinger, Turmeric, Pineapple and Banana are moderately suitable. Soil test results revealed that N, P, K, B, Ca and Mg are deficient in this Upazila. In Khadimpara, Khadimnagar and Tultuikar union Tea, Lemon, Orange, Pineapple, Zinger and Turmeric can be profitably cultivated. In Kandigaon and Tukerbazar union Rabi and Kharif vegetables can be profitably cultivated while in Hatkhola, Jalalabad and Mogolgaon union modern and local rice can be profitably cultivated.
