Effect of Different Dates of Transplanting on the Growth and Yield of Some Advanced Rice Lines in Boro Season

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The results revealed that mean grain yield of Dec. 30 transplanting was the highest (5.95 t ha^-1) but it was statistically similar to Jan. 14 and Jan. 30 transplanting. The mean grain yield of RM-250-12 irrespective of transplanting dates was 4.94 t ha^-1 which did not differ statistically from BRRI dhan28 the check variety but differed from the advanced rice line RD-25’86. The interaction results showed that the check variety BRRI dhan28 when transplanted on Dec. 30 produced the maximum grain yield (5.33 t ha^-1) but its grain yield did not show statistical differences with those of RD-250-12 transplanted at Jan. 14 and Jan. 30 and RD-25’86 transplanted at Feb. 14. On the other hand, duration required by V₁ in D₁ transplanting was 117 days while the same line required 110 days in D₄ transplanting. Similarly V₂ required 125 days and 102 days and V₃ required 105 days and 97 days at D₁ and D₄ transplanting, respectively. These indicated that with delayed transplanting shortened the crop duration.

Objectives:

The objective was to observe how the yield performances of some selected advanced rice lines were affected by different dates of transplanting.

Methodology:

Two advanced rice lines compared to a check variety were evaluated under four different dates of transplanting starting from Dec. 30, 2006 with an interval of 15 days. The four different dates of transplanting were Dec. 30, 2006 (D₁), Jan. 14, 2007 (D₂), Jan. 30 (D₃) and Feb. 14 (D₄). The advanced rice lines were RD-25’86 (V₁) and RM-250-12 (V₂) and the check variety was BRRI dhan28 (V₃). The experiment was laid out as factorial randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot was 4 m × 3 m. Thirty day-old seedlings were transplanted @ 2-3 seedlings hill-1 with a planting spacing of 25 cm x 15 cm. The plots were fertilized with 105, 15, 60, 15 and1.5 kg ha-1 of N, P, K, S, Zn as urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc oxide. All fertilizers except urea were applied at final land preparation in full amount. Urea was applied in three splits- 30% at 5-7 days after transplanting (DAT), 30% at 20-30 DAT and the last 40% at panicle initiation stage. The crop was harvested at different dates at maturity.

Achievement/Findings:

Among four transplanting dates, Dec. 30 transplanting produced the highest mean grain yield of rice while between the two advanced rice lines, the RM-250-12 had maximum grain yield but similar to BRRI dhan28 the check variety. Grain yield of BRRI dhan28 and advanced rice line RD-250-12 with Dec. 30 transplanting gave maximum grain yield and their yield did not show statistical differences with those of transplanted at Jan. 14 and Jan. 30. Crop duration from transplanting to maturity indicated that with delayed transplanting shortened the crop duration.
