Find Out the Various Kinds of Physico-mechanical Properties of Different Grades of Jute Fiber and Its Products.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The quality of the jute final /end product depends on the quality of the raw jute fiber. For this reason for predicting the quality of the product and thus selecting the proper grades of fiber for proper products. In this respect different grades of jute fiber of both White and Tossa varieties were collected and fineness in terms of diameter/ width in micron and bundle strength in lbs/mg was measured as per standard methods. All grades of jute fiber of white variety were finer than those of Tossa variety. The range of variation of fineness of all the four grades of jute fiber of both white and Tossa varieties were small. The study also showed that the average values of Pressley index were almost same for different grades of jute fiber.

Objectives:

To examine the intrinsic and extrinsic properties of jute and its products and their modifications.

Methodology:

Different grades of jute fibers of both White and Tossa varieties were collected to determine the physical properties such as fineness in terms of diameter/ width in micron using Air flow method, bundle strength in lbs.mg using Pressley Index at standard room temperature and humidity conditions in the Testing Department of BJRI during 2000-01.

Achievement/Findings:

The jute fiber of White variety is finer than Tossa variety. It was also seen that the fineness of all the four grades of jute fiber of both White and Tossa variety is not much of difference variable. The CV% varies from 1.7% to 5.36% only. The results also reveal that the average values of Pressley index are almost same for all the four grades of jute fiber of both White and Tossa varieties. The values of variation of Pressley index are higher than of fineness for all the cases.
