Breaking Strength Irregularity in Relation to Mass Diameter and Twist Variation.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The quality of the fabric is mainly depends on the yarn and the variation of the strength of a yarn is one of the most important factor to determine the quality of the yarn. Besides the strength of the yarn of a particular count is also dependent on twist and batch composition. So it is necessary to measure their breaking strength irregularity and find out optimum twist factor and batch composition due to improve the quality of the yarn and thereby the quality of the fabrics. During the period under investigation CV% and masses of fracture of CBC and Hessain yarn have been tested in the physics and testing Division during 01-01-1980 to 30-06-1980. Results showed that if irregularity could be minimized, strength would have increased for the same count or more jute could be saved for the same strength. Finding on quality ratio on the basis of mass at fracture zone can be used to increase the breaking strength of the same count or more jute can be saved for the same strength. The mathematical relationship between CV% of breaking strength and that of diameter will be used to predict the breaking strength irregularity from that of diameter.

Objectives:

1. To measure the physical parameter such as breaking strength, diameter and twist of yarn.

2. Studies on the intrinsic and extrinsic properties of jute and its products.

Methodology:

Studies have been made upom CBC yarn of nominal count 7.75lbs and hessian yarns of nominal counts 10 lbs. This CBC and hessian yarns were collected at random from different spinning frames of Dacca Jute Mill and Experimental Mill of TRC, BJRI respectively. The experiments were carried out at 65%±2% R.H. and 70±2 degree F. Breaking was determined on a constant rate of loading type Good Brand Tensile Strength Machine using a test length of 20 inches between grips and mass was calculated using electrical balance. After that a 1 inch length from the tip of each of the two broken ends in a test piece of the yarn was cut and weighed. The average weight of these two cut ends was considered to be the weight of the 1 inch length of yarn at the fracture zone of the test specimen. Diameter of the jute yarn was measured by Projectina Microscope using a lens of magnification 15. Twist was determined on a continuous twist Tester in TPI.

Achievement/Findings:

It was found that, the portion of CBC and hessian yarn other than fracture zones contains 47% and 80% more jute than those of the fracture zone respectively. The quality ratio calculated on the basis of mass at fracture zones are 46% and 64% more when calculated on actual count basis. It conforms that if yarn irregularity can be minimized strength can be increased for the same count or more jute can saved for the same strength. When the values of CV% of breaking strength and that of diameter for CBC yarn except the values of no.s 3, 4 and 5 were plotted linearly gave a good fit for straight line. On the other hand when the above the stated values except those of no.s 3, 4 and 5 were plotted in a semi log scale also gave good fit of straight line.
