Inter-cropping of Hybrid Maize with Bush Bean at Different Fertilizer Levels

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An intercropping experiment was conducted at Joydebpur, Ishurdi and Jessore during rabi season of 2002-2003 to determine the optimum fertilizer package for higher productivity of maize-bushbean intercropping system. The treatments were: T₁ # Maize normal planting (75cm x 25 cm) + 250-120-120-40 kg N, P₂O₅, K₂ 0 and S/ha, T₂ # Maize normal planting + 2 rows bush bean (100 M: 67 B) + 150-60-40-20 kg N, P₂0₅, K₂O and S / ha, T₃ # Maize normal planting + 2 rows bush bean (100 M: 67 B) + 200-80-80-30 kg N, P₂0₅, K₂O and S / ha, T₄ # Maize normal planting + 2 rows bush bean (100 M: 67 B) + 250-120-120-120-40 kg N, P₂0₅, K20 and S /ha, T₅ # Maize normal planting + 2 rows bush bean (100 M : 67 B) 300-150-120-50 kg N, P₂0₅, K₂0 and S /ha, T₆ # Maize paired row + 4 rows bush bean (100 M : 53 B) + 150-60-40-20 kg N, P₂0₅, K₂0 and S/ha, T₇ # Maize paired row + 4 rows bush bean (100 M : 53 B) + 200-80-80-30 kg N, P205, K20 and S /ha, T₈ # Maize paired row + 4 rows bush bean (100 M: 53 B) + 250-120-120-40 kg N, P₂0₅, K₂0 and S /ha, T₉ # Maize paired row + 4 rows bush bean (100 M : 53 B) + 300-150-120-50 kg N, P₂0₅, K₂0 and S /ha and T₁₀ # Sole bush bean (30 cm x 10 cm) + 150-60-40-20 kg N, P₂0₅, K20 and S/ha. Full amount of P, K, S and 1/3 rd N were applied at the time of final land preparation. Seeds of maize (cv. Pacific 988) and Bush bean (cv. BARI Jharsheem-1) were sown on December 4 at Joydebpur, November 19 at Ishurdi and November 27 at Jessore in 2002. The rest N was applied in two equal splits at 22 and 40 DAE in maize rows only. Result showed that yields of intercropped maize were identical with sole maize at the fertilizer levels of 250-120-120-4 and 300-150-120-50 kg N, P₂0₅, K₂0 and S /ha irrespective of planting systems. Sole bush bean produced significantly highest green pod yield in all locations. Bush bean in intercropping system gave similar yield with the application of 200-80-80-30, 250-120-120-40 and 300-150-120-50 kg N, P₂0₅, K₂0 and S/ha at Joybdepur and Jessore. Maize paired row plus 4 rows bush bean fertilized with 250-120-120-40 kg N, P₂0₅, K₂0 and S/ha gave highest LER, MEY, gross return and BCR at all the locations.

Objectives:

To determine the optimum fertilizer package for higher productivity of maize-bush bean intercropping system.

Methodology:

A field experiment was carried out at BARI Head Quarter, Joydebpur, RARS Ishurdi and RARS Jessore during rabi season of 2002-2003. Ten treatments were tested in a randomized complete block design with three reapplications. Unit plot size was 4.0 m x 4.5 m. Maize (cv. pacific 988) and bushbean (cv. BARI Jharsheem-1) were tested in this experiment . The treatments were: T1 = Maize normal planting (75 cm x 25 cm) + 250-120-120-40 N, P₂O₅, K₂O and S kg/ha T2 = Maize normal planting + 2 rows bush bean (100M:67B) + 150-60-40-20 N, P₂O₅, K₂O and S kg/ha T3 = Maize normal planting + 2 rows bush bean (100M:67B) + 200-80-80-30 N, P₂O₅, K₂O and S kg/ha T4 = Maize normal planting + 2 rows bush bean (100M:67B) + 250-120-120-40 N, P₂O₅, K₂O and S kg/ha T5 = Maize normal planting + 2 rows bush bean (100M:67B) + 300-150-120-50 N, P₂O₅, K₂O and S kg/ha T6 = Maize paired row + 4 rows bush bean (100M:53B) + 150-60-40-20 N, P₂O₅, K₂O and S kg/ha T7 = Maize paired row + 4 rows bush bean (100M:53B) + 200-80-80-30 N, P₂O₅, K₂O and S kg/ha T8 = Maize paired row + 4 rows bush bean (100M:53B) + 250-120-120-40 N, P₂O₅, K₂O and S kg/ha T9 = Maize paired row + 4 rows bush bean (100M:53B) + 300-150-120-50 N, P₂O₅, K₂O and S kg/ha T10 = Sole bush bean (30cm x 10cm) + 150-60-40-20 N, P₂O₅, K₂O and S kg/ha The experiment was sown on December 04 (Joydebpur), November 19 (Ishurdi) and November 27 (Jessore) in 2002. Fertilizers were applied acording to treatments. Full amount of P, K, S and 1/3 of N were applied at the time of final land preparation. The rest N was applied in two equal splits at 22 and 44 days after (DAE) in maize rows only.

Achievement/Findings:
