Thermal Conductivity of Woolenized Jute and Jute Products.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Thermal conductivity of wool or woolenised fabrics plays important physical significant properties. Lower value of thermal conductivity of woolenised fibers indicates the higher quality of woolenised properties and vice versa. Thermal conductivity of hand-made fabric made from woolenised jute yarn, supplied by experimental jute mills of BJRI. The sample thickness was 0.7 to 0.8 cm was determined by both mechanical and electrical methods. Tests were carried out on three treated sample of different colors and on untreated sample of sacking cloth, all of different fiber densities. The experiment was performed in an uncontrolled atmosphere of an average room temperature of 295 degree Kelvin and a relative humidity range from 65% to 88% in the physics department during 1980.

Methodology:

Thermal conductivity of woolenised jute products and lignin content of jute fabrics was determined by improved Lee’s Apparatus in both mechanical and electrical methods. The apparatus used in mechanical method is a self made Lee’s apparatus. The apparatus was made of two brass plates between which the sample was placed and a steam box was made on the upper plate by soldering a cylindrical copper sheet on its having a steam inlet and out-let by the upper and lower side of the box respectively. The thickness of each plate was 100 meter and diameter was taken to be 10300 meter. The apparatus was suspended with a ring, clamped with a stand and two thermometers were placed horizontally within the side holes in the upper and lower plates, for having the temperature difference the two faces of the sample when it is placed between the plates.

Achievement/Findings:

Although the calculation was not completed as the temperature correction was incomplete, it is roughly estimated that approximately fair result can be had by using this method. The rough calculation of the test readings showed a probable lower value of thermal conductivity in case of woolensied jute and jute products compared to raw jute products.
