Swelling characteristics of both raw and dilignified jute fibers were determined by measuring the changes in diameter and length of the fiber exposed to water and different organic vapors and immersed in those liquids. Longitudinal swelling has been found to be very much negligible compared to transverse swelling. In the case of raw jute fiber, the maximum transverse swelling (32.5%) was obtained with 30% sodium hydroxide solution followed by water(29.51%), formaldehyde (23.08%), methyl alcohol (9.86%), acetone (8.95%), acetic acid (8.7%) and ethyl alcohol (6.64%). In case of delignified fiber maximum transverse swelling (38.5%) was obtained with 25% sodium hydroxide solution followed by water 36.67% formaldehyde (30%) , methyl alcohol (13.10%), acetone(12.82%) acetic acid 10.31% and ethyl alcohol (9.64%). It was found that swelling was higher in liquid phase than in vapor phase. The delignified fiber was found to break at 30% sodium hydroxide solution.

1. To measure the swelling characteristic of raw jute and treated fiber.

2 To study the swelling of jute fiber in different organic and inorganic vapor.

The swelling of treated and raw jute fibers were measured by completely immersing the sample in different kinds of organic and inorganic liquids and water. Samples were prepared from fibers by cutting short length from the middle portion of the stands and then hand carding and carefully teasing out to remove any adhering foreign materials. Raw and treated jute fiber filament were suspended vertically from the two wings of a hook attached to the top of the tube and was held straight by attaching small weight. As before the dry weight was obtained by evacuating chamber. The samples were immersed in distilled water in the chamber. The swelling was measured by the accurate measurement of the fiber diameter. The sample was then dried by evacuation and was exposed different kinds of liquids and the swelling was measured by cathetometer.

Results obtained with liquid water showed that the swelling of treated fiber is higher by more than 7% than that of raw jute fiber. The distinctive feature is that swelling of both treated and raw fiber with liquid water is found to be higher than those results obtained with water vapor. The maximum transverse swelling in case of raw and delignified jute with liquid water are found to be 29.51% and 36.67% respectively while with water vapor it was found 26.13% and 29.41% respectively. In case of jute it was found that longitudinal swelling is very negligible compared to the transverse swelling. The result reveals that the rate of swelling is more for treated fiber compared to the raw jute fiber.
