DNA Fingerprinting of BRRI Released Varieties.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Objective of this study was to determine the DNA Fingerprinting of BRRI released varieties. Among different biotechnological techniques, use of molecular market systems is of greater relevance in developing genetic fingerprints of species/varieties and cultivars and selecting enviable genotypes for crop improvement in limited time scale with greater efficiency and reliability. Accordingly, an attempt was undertaken using primers of six simple sequences repeat (SSR) markers to characterize the test varieties at the molecular level. Consequently draft identity cards of eight BRRI released varieties have been developed.

Objectives:

To determine the DNA Fingerprinting of BRRI released varieties.

Methodology:

As a signatory state of WTO, Bangladesh is committed to characterize her important genetic resources for plant variety protection. To give a complete identity of a variety, phenotypic characters alone is not sufficient in order to establish intellectual property right. Polymorphisms at molecular level are more precise method of identifying differences. Genomics, the science of opening the mystery of structure and function of a genome in totality, has emerged as the single most powerful tool for detailed analysis of organization, expression and interaction of an organism at the genome level. The test primers were RM253, RM174, RM256, RM337, and RM310 & RM297. The polymorphism of BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29, BRRI dhan34, BRRI dhan40 and BRRI dhan41 were investigated. The amplified fragments of 50 - ± 300 bp were considered for diversity assessment.
