Studies of Kinetics of Sorption and Desorption of Water and Organic Vapors Into Jute Fiber.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The ability of absorbs water and organic vaporous fiber is dependent on fiber's chemical composition and physical structure. Kinetics of sorption and desorption of organic vapor viz ethyl-alcohol, methyl alcohol, acetone, carbon tetrachloride and formaldehyde into both raw and delignified jute fiber of BWA grade were studied in the Physics department of BJRI during 1980. The vacuum dried samples were exposed rapidly into different organic vapor and water and regain percentages were measured in time. From the shape of isotherms it had been evident that unlike jute water system the absorption obeyed Ficks’ Law of Diffusion displaying almost linear sorption isotherms while desorption, excepting the case of acetone showing very little residual uptake resulted in isotherms more or less sigmoid in shape. From the results it was also evident that the uptakes of delignified samples were higher than those of raw fibers except in case of formaldehyde.

Objectives:

1. To study the kinetics of sorption and desorption of water and different organic vapor.

2. To study the dye-ability of both raw and delignified jute fibers.

Methodology:

The middle portion of the strands from a sample of good quality white jute (BWA) was selected, which was carefully hand carded and teased out to individual filaments to remove any adhering foreign materials. A portion was then delignified and the changed weighed was measured gravimetrically by a quartz helical spring absorption balance. Jute sample both raw and delignified was attached to a platinum rider and suspended from the end of a quartz spring. The sample was dried at 35 degree C by evacuation to equilibrium dry weight. The vacuum dried sample was then exposed rapidly to different organic vapors one at a time. The sample was dried by evacuation each time prior to the exposure to a different vapors. In this way a series of experiments conducted with ethyl alcohol, Methyl Alcohol, Acetone, Carbon Tetrachloride and Formaldehyde.

From the shape of the isotherms it can be said that unlike jute water system the sorption appears to obey the Ficks’ Law of diffusion and subsequent desorption shows very little residual uptake but when acetone vapor was injected in to the absorption chamber the original dry weight was not found on subsequent evacuation which means that there might be some sorbet molecule left inside the jute fiber.It can therefore, be assumed that practically no bonding between the sorbet molecules and the constitutents of jute at all take place. In the delignified sample the fiber molecules become open and as such the molecules find it easy to enter inside the fiber which accounts for the higher uptake by the delignified sample.
