Studies on Production Factors Limiting Yield and Yield Attributes of Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at Jamalpur during the rabi season of 2001-2002 to identify the factors limiting yield and yield contributing characters of wheat. Treatments were: (i) recommended package (RP) sowing on November 23 + 100-60-40-20 kg N, P₂O₅, K2O and S/ha 3 irrigations at 21, 55 and 70 DAE + 1 hand weeding at 25 DAS + seed treatments Vitavex, (ii) Farmer’s practice (FP), (iii) delayed sowing (December 13) + RP, (iv) RP-weed control (EC), (v) RP-50% fertilizer of recommend doses (vi) RP-irrigation, (vii) RP-irrigation at 55 and 70 DAS, (viii) RP seed treatment by vitavex, (ix) RP-line sowing (Broadcating), (x) RP furadan and (xi) RP (LS + ST +F +WC). For fermers practice fertilizers were used @ 30-20-28 kg N, P₂O₅, K₂O/ha. Full amount of PK were applied as basal and ½ of N was applied at 21 DAS as top decreased followed by irrigation and another irrigation given at grain filling period fertilizer were applied as basal. Seeds of wheat variety Shatabdi were sown as per treatment with 120 kg seeds/ha and 165 kg seeds/ha for recommended package and fermers’ practice, respectively.The result showed that highest grain yield (2.90 t/ha) was obtained from the recommended package. Reduction in yield was recorded by 44% where the crop was grown under farmers practice. Delayed sowing also affected grain yield and it reduced by 30% than recommended package. Reduction in yield (26%) was also recorded when the plots were fertilized by 50% of recommended doses. The result of the experiment revealed that grain yield might be affected adversely when any one factor of the recommended packages is curtailed.

Objectives:

To find out the possible factor (s) of yield gap of wheat between research and farmer's field

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur during the period from November 2001 to March 2002 to identify the factors limiting yield and yield contributing characters of wheat. There were 11 treatments viz. Treatments were: (T₁₎ recommended package (RP)100-60-40-20 kg N, P₂O₅, K₂O and S/ha + 3 irrgtations at 21, 55 and 70 DAS + 1 hand weeding at 25 DAS + Vitavex, (T₂) Farmer’s practice (FP), (T₃) delayed sowing (December 13) + RP, (T₄) RP-weed control (EC), (T₅) RP-50% fertilizer of recommend doses, (T₆) RP-irrigation,(T₇) RP-irrigation at 55 and 70 DAS, (T₈) RP seed treatment by vitavex,(T₉) RP-line sowing (LS),(T₁₀) RP furadan and (T₁₁) RP (LS + ST + F + WC) included in the experiment. Design of the experiment was randomized complete block having three replications. The unit plot size was 5m x 3m. Seeds were sown on 23 November for optimum sowing and 13 December for late sown condition. Seed rate used for recommended practice was 120 kg/ha while for farmer's practice the rate was 165 kg/ha. Fertilizers for recommended practices were for farmer's practices were applied @ 100-60-40-20 kg NPKS/ha, respectively. Yield and yield contributing characters were recorded and analyzed statistically for comparison.
