Efficacy of Botanicals Against Root Knot Nematode (meloidogyne Incognita) of Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the pot house at BARI, Gazipur during 2012-13 winter season to test the efficacy of five botanicals, viz. seed, leaves and roots of Tegetes erecta, Croton sparsiflorus, Azodirachta indica, Areca catechu, Ananus comosus for the management of root knot diseases (Meloidogyne Incognita ) of tomato. Five kilogram of pot soils inoculated with root knot nematodes from infested Indian Spinach root @ 2g/ pot-1 with 5 replications. Uniform size of 25 days age of tomato seedling root dipped in botanicals extract for 30 minutes. Root dip treatment with root extract of Tagetes erecta resulted significant reduction of the soil nematode population also improved plant growth in terms of length of shoots and roots, yield of tomato. Among the treatments use of Tegetes erect and Azodirachta indica extract gave satisfactory results to reduce root knot disease and to improve plant growth and yield of tomato.

A experiment was conducted with the following treatments having 5 replications. The treatments were roots of Marigold and Ban marich, leaves of Neem, and Pineapple, betel nut seed with a control.

Achievement/Findings:

The present investigation gave considerable reduction in gall indices of tomato roots. Whatever the treatment used all the treatments decreased the gall in tomato roots over the control. The highest gall index 3.2 was observed under the control treatment where botanicals were not used. The lowest gall index 1.1 was recorded from the Marigold treatments. The gall index decrease over the control and varied from 21.87 to 65.62%. All the treatments significantly reduced gall number in tomato roots compared to control which had the highest 265.53 number of galls per gram of roots was found in untreated control. The lowest of gall number 93.31 per gram root was found where neem leaf extract used. Betel nut treatments was found less effective and recorded significantly higher galls compared to other treatments. But marigold, Ban marich, pineapple leaf treatments were statistically similar significantly different from Neem leaf treatment. The range of gall number decreased over the control from 35.24 to 65.21. The highest decreased was found from marigold treatments. All the treatments, improved the plant growth of tomato. The highest length of shoots 54.51 cm were recorded under the Neem leaf treatment. In case of shoot height all the treatments are statistically similar and there was no significant different over the control. On the other hand, the root weight of tomato plant was not significantly different from the control treatments.
