Performance Study of Broiler Chicken by Using Rice Straw as Litter Material in Poultry House

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted with Cobb-500 broiler strain. For this purpose 200 broiler chicks were purchased from Kazi Hatechery, Gazipur, Dhaka. Data were analyzed in Randomized Completely Block Design. The major performance parameters such as body weight, feed consumption, FCR and mortality were not affected (P<0.05) significantly by rice straw, rice husk and sawdust litters. The moisture of initial and at the end of different weeks showed significant ((P<0.05) difference among the litter materials. High fiber containing rice straw contained significantly (P<0.05) highest amount of moisture in comparison with rice husk and sawdust at 2nd, 3rd and 4th weeks of broiler age. No significant (P<0.05) economic profit was found among the treatments. So, chopped rice straw can be used as broiler litter in the poultry house in dry season up to 4 weeks of age.

Objectives:

To study the important performances of broiler chicken rearing under different litter materials
To determine moisture content level of different litter materials used in broiler house
To identify the best cost effective bedding material as litter.

Methodology:

Cobb-500 broiler strain was used to conduct the experiment. For this purpose 200 broiler chicks were purchased from Kazi Hatchery, Gazipur, Dhaka. There were three treatments, such as T₁– Chopped rice straw, T₂ – Rice husk and T₃– Sawdust. Achievement/Findings:

The production performances of broiler chicken were not affected by the rice straw litter. The moisture percent of rice straw litter was increased day by day without affecting production performances - The economic analysis also supported the use of rice straw as broiler litter in the poultry house.
