Genotypic Variation in Root Growth, Dry Matter Accumulation, Nutrient Uptake and Yield of Mustard Under Varying Levels of Fertilizer

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Joydebpur, Gaizpur during rabi season of 2001-2002 to find out the genotypic variation in root development, dry matter accumulation, nutrient uptake and yield of mustard varieties under varying levels of fertilizer. The treatment consisted of six varieties of mustard viz. BARI Sarisha-11, Rai-5, BARI Sarisha-6, BARI Sarisha-9, BARI Sarisha-7, BARI Sarisha-8 and three levels of fertilizer mixture viz. 80-60-40-20, 100-70-50-30 and 120-80-60-40 kg N, P₂0₅, K₂0, and S /ha. Fertilizer NPK and S were applied in the form of Urea, TSP, MP and Gypsum, respectively. Seeds of mustard varieties were sown in lines 30 cm x 5 cm spacing on November 10, 2001. Half of urea and whole amount of TSP, MP, Gypsum were applied at the time of final land preparation. The remaining half of the urea was top-dressed at 25 DAE followed by irrigation. The second and third irrigation was provided to the crop at pod formation and seed filling period. Application of fertilizer increased root length density (RLD) and the effect was much more pronounced at 120-80-60-40 kg N, P₂0₅, K₂0 and S /ha. BARI Sarisha-11 secured highest in RLD followed by Rai-5 while BARI Sarisha-9 had the least irrespective fertilizer levels. Highest rate of dry matter production was observed from 50 to 80 DAE irrespective of varieties and levels of fertilizer. However, increase in yield with increase in levels of fertilizer irrespective of varieties. Uptake of N by seed of variety BARI Sarisha-11 and Rai-5 was highest irrespective of fertilizer levels. P and S uptake by seeds of different mustard varieties followed a pattern similar to its N uptake. The result revealed that application of 120-80-60-40 kg N, P₂0₅, K₂0 and S /ha enhanced seed yield in BARI Sarisha-11, BARI Sarisha-6, BARI Sarisha-7 and BARI Sarisha-8. On the contrary, high levels of fertilizer produced no yield advantage in case of Rai-5 and BARI Sarisha-9.

Objectives:

To find out the genotypic variation in root development, dry matter accumulation, nutrient uptake and yield of mustard under varying levels of fertilizer.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute farm Joydebpur, Gazipur during rabi season of 2001-2002. The soil was silty clay loam in texture having low organic matter (0.80%) and deficient in total nitrogen (0.08%), available phosphorus (12 ppm), exchangeable potassium (0.18 meq/100g soil) and available sulphur (10 ppm). The treatments consisted of six varieties of mustard: BARI Sarisha-11, Rai-5, BARI Sarisha-6, Sarisha-9, Sarisha-7, Sarisha-8 and three levels of fertilizer mixture: 80-60-40-20, 100-70-50-30 and 120-80-60-40 kg N, P₂O₅, K₂O and S/ha. The field trials were set up in a RCB (factorial) design with three replications. The unit plot size was 5m x 3m. Fertilizers NPK and S were applied in the form of urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum respectively.

Achievement/Findings:

The result revealed that application of 120-80-60-40 kg N, P₂0₅, K₂0 and S /ha enhanced seed yield in BARI Sarisha-11, BARI Sarisha-6, BARI Sarisha-7 and BARI Sarisha-8. On the contrary, high levels of fertilizer had no yield advantage in case of Rai-5 and BARI Sarisha-9.
