Cropping Patten Survey in Sadar Upazila of Rangamati.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Rangamati Sadar Upazila belongs to the South-Eastern Hills of Agroecological Zone 29. This region differs from other regions of the country in its topography. The area is characterized by high hills and crops are grown mainly n valleys. However, four land types: highland, medium highland, medium lowland and lowland have been identified. Total area of the Upazila is 54641 ha, of which highland is the dominate land type (49.89%) followed by MHL(23.20%). Medium low and LL cover 1.13% and 1.74% area respectively. Moreover, major portion of the land under different land types remains follow every year. Eleven cropping patterns are in practice of which 6 cropping patterns are rice based. Aus rice in Jhum culture is the dominant production system in the highland, which covers 250 ha. Zinger and turmeric are the major crops grown in this land type. In MHL, Winter Vegetable-Fallow-Fallow is the dominant cropping pattern, which occupies an area of 477 ha. Boro-Follow-T. Aman,Fallow-Fallow- T. Aman, Winter vegetable-Fallow-T. Anman and Potato- Fallow-T. Aman are other major cropping patterns in MHL. Some farmers also grow sugarcane in this land type. Boro-Follow-Follow is the only cropping pattern in MLL and LL. Medium lowland and lowland in valleys remain waterlogged throughout the year except in Boro season. The land is locally "fringed" land. After receding water in the month of December-January, farmers transplant shortr duratuion Boro rice in these land types. However, boro rice in the LL is a risky crop due to uncertain flash fllod in valley. Adoption of MV rice is most 100% Bro and T. Aman season while this only 6% in Aus season. The modern rice varieties BR1 and BRRI dhan 28 during Boro season and BR11, BRRI dhan32 and BRRI dhan39 during T. Aman season are widely grown by the farmers.During Aus season, local variety Galon is the single most dominant variety. BR24, BRRI dhan26 and BRRI dhan27 have been reported to cultivate in only few hectares of land. The average yield range from 4.90-5.5 t/ha in Boro season and 2.40-4.20 t/ha T. Aman. In Aus season, yield of modern rice varieties are high and ranged from 2.85 to 4.20 t/ha with the highest for BRRI dhan27 and it is low for local varieties.

Objectives:

To identify cropping patterns being followed by farmers in different land types, their area coverage, status in pattern by land types and constraints to further adoption of modern rice varieties and improve cropping patterns in different upazilas of the country.

Methodology:

A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from different records of Upazila Office and in consultation with DAE personnel of Rangamati Sadar Upazila.

Achievement/Findings:

For improving and sustaining the farm productivity, whole farm production system needs to be addressed to (i) develop and validate component technologies for rice and non-rice crops. (ii) develop and validate component technologies for Jhum system. (iii) reduce yield gap in Boro and T. Aman particularly in Boro-T. Aman system. (iv) make available seeds of MV Aus rice, (v) demonstrate technologies related to the livestock development and (vi) demonstrate apiculture.
