Inter Cropping Legumes with Sunflower and Fodder Maize

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two field experiments were carried out to study the effect of inter cropping chickpea with sunflower and summer mungbean with fodder-maize (grown for fodder) on the productivity and soil nutrient status. Three rows of chickpea accommodated in the space of 70 cm between two adjacent paired row sunflower’ showed significantly the highest mungbean grain yield (1015 kg/ha), combined grain yield (3036 kg/ha), sunflower equivalent yield (3645 kg/ha), relative yield of both the crops (0.92 and 0.70 respectively) and land equivalent ratio (1.62). Row arrangement could be followed to grow chickpea as an inter crop with the sunflower. ‘4 row-mungbean accommodated at the space of 100 cm left between maize paired rows’ showed the highest per hectare fresh weight and seed yield of mungbean, combined fresh weight and land equivalent ratio.

Methodology:

Experiment I: Effect of inter cropping chickpea with sunflower under different row and spacing arrangements: The experiment was carried out in Randomized Complete Block design. Seeds of sunflower var. Kironi (D S-1) was sown with the inter crop BARI chola-5 in Nov., 2008. Experiment II: Effect of inter cropping mungbean with fodder maize under different planting geometry.

Achievement/Findings:

Row arrangement could be followed to grow chickpea as an inter crop with the sunflower. Planting geometry could be followed to inter crop mungbean with fodder maize. In this study plant to plant distance within the row of maize was 25 cm. So it is essential to examine lower plant to plant distances in future studies.
