Characterization of Barley

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at PGRC with 49 accessions of barley (Hordeum vulgare) for characterization. This study has demonstrated that the phenotypic variability for several important plant characteristics of barley germplasm. Variability showed in different plant characters (growth habit), inflorescence characters (spike density, raw number/ lateral spikelet, awn berbs, glume and glume awn, awn colour) and seed characters (rachilla hair, kernel colour). In quantitative characteristics, the highest co-efficient of variation was found in number of tiller per plant (41.7%) followed by hundred seed weight (19.93%) and grains per inflorescence (18.41%).

Objectives:

(i) to study the genetic variability, (ii) to identify salient features that distinguish accessions from one another, (iii) to identify the promising accessions for varietal development and (iv) to increase seeds for conservation.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Plant Genetic Resources Centre BARI, Joydebpur during Rabi, 2012. The land was prepared with proper cultivation and raising bed. Recommended fertilizer dose (Urea- 185, TSP- 125 and MP- 85 kg/ha) was applied in the field. TSP and MP applied as basal dose and Urea was applied as top dressed at in two installments. The seeds of 49 accessions were direct sown in the bed on 3 December, 2012. Each accession was occupying 3 m long with three rows. Line to line distance was 40 cm and plant to plant distance was 5 cm. Distance maintained between accession was 80 cm. Irrigation was given at tillering, flowering and grain filling stage for ensuring proper growth and development of the crop. Weeding was also done as when required. Most accessions were severely affected by seedling rot at the end of December due to continuous foggy weather. Bavistin was sprayed at frequent interval. Crop field was surrounded by repellents strip to protect the birds. Crops were harvested at their different maturity dates from March to April/ 2013. All of the observation was recorded as per Descriptor for Barley (1982) and statistical analysis was done using Genstat software.

Achievement/Findings:

Maximum accessions had erect (37) growth habit followed by prostate (9) and intermediate (3). Spike density was intermediate (35 acc.) followed by intermediate (7) and dense (7). Lemma was awned among the accessions where maximum accessions (42) showed rough awn berbs with lemma teeth (48) but few (7) smooth awn was also found. Length of glume and awn as long as kernel appeared in 40 accessions but shorter than kernel had 2 accessions and longer than kernel had 7 accessions. Spikelet arrangement with four rows lateral florets was the highest (44) while six rows lateral floret and two rows lateral had 3 and 2 accessions, respectively. Glume and awn colour was white/ amber in 49 and 39 accessions, respectively but yellow coloured awn was also present in 10 accessions. It was very difficult to estimate the rachilla hair length. On the eye estimation basis, 46 accessions showed short rachilla hair and 3 accessions showed long rachilla hair. After removing lemma and pelea and aleuron layer, white (27 accessions) and little blakish shade (22) coloured grain were found among the accessions. The crop showed lodging at maturity from very slight to extensive level in 39 and 10 accessions, respectively. No variation was observed in plant and auricule pigmentation. Covered grain was found in all the accessions. On an average, plant height was 80.32 cm and inflorescence length was 8.61 cm. Number of tiller and grains per inflorescence ranges from 4.2 to 19.6 and 20 to 64, respectively. Days to 50 % flowering and days to harvest ranged from 38 to 84 and 89 to 134 days, respectively. The highest coefficient of variation (41.40 %) was found in number of tiller followed by 100-seed weight (19.93%) and grains per inflorescence (18.41%), and the lowest in days to harvest (9.44%).
