Development of a Management Approach Against Fruit Borer, Spodoptera Litura Attacking Chilli

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted in Rabi, 2011-12 in the farmers field of Titas, Comilla to evaluate the effectiveness of some management options against chilli fruit borer. The IPM approach comprising of weekly release of bio-control agents, Trichogramma evanescens and Bracon hebetor + sex pheromone mass trapping of adult moths appeared as the best management option against fruit borer reducing 82.06 % fruit infestation over control and provided significantly the highest yield (6.52 t/ha).

Objectives:

To develop an integrated management approach against pod borer attacking chilli.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the farmers field at Titas, Comilla during 2011-12 to evaluate the efficacy of some management options against chilli fruit borer. Chilli seedlings of were transplanted in a plot of 10m x 8.5m having plant spacing of 45cm and row spacing of 60cm. The experiment was laid out in RCBD having 4 treatments including control with three replications. Standard agronomic practices were followed to raise the crop. The treatments were as follows: T₁ = Weekly release of bio-control agents Trichogramma evanescens @ 1gm/ha and Bracon hebetor @ 1 jar (800-1200 adults)/ha + Sex pheromone mass trapping of adult moths @ 40 traps/ha; T₂ = Farmers practice (Blanket spray with Cartap 50SP @ 2gl/L of water at 7 days interval. First spray during initiation of pest attack and cotinued up to last harvest); T₃ = Three sprays of bio-pesticide Spinosad 45 SC (@ 0.4 ml/L of water starting from initiation of the pest attack at 15 days interval); T₄ = Untreated control
