Survey on Betel Vine Diseases at Jamalpur Region

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A Survey was conducted at betel vine growing areas of Jamalpur like, Lahirikanda, Nurundi and kanil during 2010-2011 cropping season. Disease samples were collected from the surveyed area and laboratory work ie. isolation and identification of pathogen was done at Regional Agricultural Research Station Jamalpur. About eleven betel vine growing field (pan boroj ) were surveyed four times, July 2010, September 2010, January 2011 and April 2011 in the sleeted area. Four main disease namely, vine rot, leaf blight and rot, leaf spot and Foot and root rot were identified during the survey period. Three fungal pathogens namely Colletotrichum capsici, Phytophthra parasitica and Sclerotium rolfsii were isolated and identified from the infected plant parts. Among the betel vine diseases, vine rot caused by Colletotrichum capsici was found the most serious disease for betel vine production. This disease mainly starts from June 15 to July 15 and ends at the end of October and during September 15 to October 15 the disease cause havoc for betel vine production. Besides, leaf rot become severe at August 15 to September 30. Another disease root rot caused by Sclerotium is minor and it prevails almost round the year.

Objectives:

To survey and identify pathogens causing diseases of Betel leaf.

Methodology:

Survey work was conducted at betel vine growing areas of Jamalpur (Lahirikanda, Ghoradhap and kanil). The survey work was conducted four times during July 2010, September 2010, January 2011 and April 2011 in the sleeted area. About eleven well developed garden of different farmer’s field was surveyed (Table 117). The vine of the cultivars (Deshi pan) was planted about 30 cm × 10 cm row to row and plant to plant distance. Mustard oil cake was applied 6-7 t/ha, cultural practices like weeding, irrigation, pruning, tieing, lowering of vines etc. were done whenever needed to maintain the proper plant growth. The disease incidence and severity of the leaf rot and vine rot was recorded. Disease samples were collected from the surveyed area and laboratory work ie, pathogen isolation and identification was done at Regional Agricultural Research Station Jamalpur during 2000-2011 cropping season. Data on weather variables namely temperature, RH (%) and rainfall were recorded during survey period.

Four main diseases namely, vine rot, leaf blight and rot, leaf spot and Foot and root rot was identified during the survey period. There fungal pathogens namely Colletotrichum capsici, Phytophthra parasitica and Sclerotium rolfsii were isolated and identified from the infected plant parts of betel vine. Fungal pathogens were identified based on their cultural and morphological characters. Among the betel vine diseases vine rot caused by Colletotrichum capsici was fond the most serious disease for betel vine production. This disease causes havoc for betel vine production which mainly starts from June 15 –July 15 and ends at the end of October. And during September 15 to October 15 the pathogen frequently cause serious damage of the vine of betel leaf. Besides leaf rot become severe at August 15 to September 30. The disease foot rot causes by Sclerotium is minor and it prevails almost all the year round. The frequency of outbreak of the diseases during the year is presented in the graphical figure 1. From the graph it was found that the outbreak of the stem rot disease is highest in the September-October when the average temperature was 28.50C and 88.33% and rainfall was 3.274mm. On the other hand Phytophthora leaf rot was more in July to early September and the Sclerotial rot is more or less similar during the year
