Survey and Identification of Seed-borne Pathogens of Vegetables in Jamalpur Region

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A survey work was conducted in the Jamalpur region and Laboratory work was done in the plant pathology Laboratory at RARS, Jamalpur during 2010-2011. Farmers field of Jamalpur and Sherpur districts namely, Nandina, Narikeli, Agro service, BADC, Dapunia, Bania bazar, Sharifpur, Kushumhati (Sherpur), Nakla (Sherpur), Mollapara, Hati Agla, Ginapara, East sherir char, West sherir char, BRAC (Jamalpur). Pathalia, Beltia, Baruamari, Jamalpur was surveyed. Seeds and plant samples of different vegetables like, Cabbage, radish, carrot, tomato, brinjal, bottle gourd, bean, okra, Ash gourd, bitter gourd, pointed gourd was also collected for laboratory work.Different pathogens like, Alternaria sp, Phomophsis sp, Aspergillus sp, Colletotricham lindemuthianum, Aspergillus niger, Alternaria brassicae, Alternaria brassicicola etc were found from the samples.

Objectives:

To survey and identify seed-borne pathogens of vegetables as well as to advise the farmers for proper management strategy

Methodology:

The survey work was conducted in the farmer’s field, BRAC and BADC fiield of Jamalpur region and Laboratory work was done in the plant pathology Laboratory at RARS, Jamalpur during 2010-2011. Farmers field of Jamalpur and Sherpur districts namely, Nandina, Narikeli, Agro service, BADC, Dapunia, Bania bazar, Sharifpur, Kushumhati (Sherpur), Nakla (Sherpur), Mollapara, Hati Agla, Ginapara, East sherir char, West sherir char, BRAC (Jamalpur). Pathalia, Beltia, Baruamari, Jamalpur was surveyed. Disease incidence and disease severity of vegetables were recorded by the percentage in eye estimation. Seeds and plant samples (100 samples) of different vegetables like, Cabbage, radish, carrot, tomato, brinjal, bottle gourd, bean, okra, Ash gourd, bitter gourd, pointed gourd was also collected from the farmers and retailers of the surveyed area. Collected seeds and plant samples were tested in the laboratory through blotter paper technique, growing pathogens on the agar medium. Detection of the pathogens associated with seeds and plant samples were isolated and identification was done through colony character, fruiting bodies under compound microscope and microscopy. ISTA seed testing manual was followed during the detection of the seed-borne pathogens.

Twenty one (21) different types of fungi and one bacteria were identified from the 100 seeds samples and plant parts of different vegetables collected from the surveyed area
