Charaipara Landslide- a Case Study in Bangladesh.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Hilly region of Bangladesh occupy about 12% of the total area of the country and were a rich repository of natural resources. These hills are aligned South-South-East to North-North-West almost parallel to the coast. Intensive rainfall in monsoon, human interference by deforestation, shifting cultivation and development activities accelerate topsoil loss and slope failure in the region. There is no evidence of large scale landslides but landslides of small and medium scale are apparent almost all over the hill areas of Bangladesh. Very few works have been done to address the landslide problem, their control or debris management. Landslide phenomena are not even considered as consequences of abuse of sloping land or they are regarded as common natural phenomenon, which cannot be mitigated. A medium scale landslide at Charaipara near Banderban hill district town occurred on 12 July 1997. The rainfall was then >150mm/day and the whole area were inundated by floodwater at variable depth. The devastated area occupies about 3.0 ha creating an artificial lake about 5.0 ha by obstructing hill stream flow. The landslide is one of the best examples of an important hazard to be addressed.

Objectives:

The case study was done to explore the causes and estimate devastation effect of landslide in hill ecosystem of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The work was done by: (a) Studying geology, land cover, land use, soil and lithology of the area through surveying the area. The field survey was carried out by using Theodolite and Prismatic Compass. (b) Interviewing local people to explore the commencement of the slide.

Achievement/Findings:

Charaipara landslide is not the only one, which has occurred in the hilly region of Bangladesh. Many landslides or slips of different scale were spectacular throughout the region. But the effect of these hazards has not been appreciated until it costs lives and properties. It is recommended that use of hills, mining of stones or other materials and construction of infrastructures should be made so as to avoid the risk of landslide. Therefore policy and decision makers, planners and implementing agencies may come up with programs for promoting awareness among the hill people and provide training for prevention and/or mitigation of landslides. In addition, any damages done to ecosystem during implantation of development works should be rehabilitated by the implementing agencies. Restrictions may be imposed on the agencies to prepare project proposal with provisions to adequate funds for rehabilitation or restoration of the ecosystem. It may be concluded that Charaipara landslide is a bad example, which could trigger our perception to learn the gravity and urgency for considering landslide as one of the major hazards in the hilly areas of Bangladesh.
