Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted for testing field performance of an upland weeder at FSR site, Narikeli, Jamalpur during 1991-92. Weeder performance was compared with that of Khurpi. Line sown and broadcast jute fields were weeded by weeder and Khurpi, respectively. The effective weeding capacity of weeder and Khurpi were 0.0032 ha/hr and 0.0016 ha/hr, respectively. The time as well as cost of weeding by weeder was about 50 percent less than that of Khurpi. The performance of the weeder was satisfactory in farmers' field.

Objectives:

1. To evaluate the performance of the weeder in farmers' field

2. To compare the cost of weeding by weeder (in line sowing) and traditional equipment Khurpi (in broadcast).

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Farming System Research (FSR) site, Narikeli, Jamalpur in 1991-92. To test the performance of the weeder, jute seeds were sown in farmers' field with 4 replications. And to compare the performance of the weeder with that of traditional equipment Khurpi, each plot of land was divided into two and seeds were sown in the following treatments : T₁ - Broadcasting by hand; T₂ - Line sowing by seeder.

Four units of the upland weeder were distributed among the farmers. Line sown plots were weeded by weeder and the broadcast plots were weeded by Khurpi. Two weeding operations were conducted during the study. First weeding was done after 15 to 20 days of sowing and the second weeding was done after 35 to 45 days of sowing. Weeding and thinning operations were performed at the same time. Row to row spacing of the jute crop was 20 cm. In the case of weeding in line sown fields, the weeder was operated between the lines at a speed of about 1.0 km/hr and about 70 percent weeds were destroyed by the weeder operation. The rest 30 percent weed (close to plants) and thinning were done by Khurpi. Broadcast jute fields were weeded by Khurpi. The weed intensity in jute fields were about 350/m² to 500/m²at the time of first weeding. Weed intensity at the second time was almost 50 percent of the first time (125 to 240). Weeding time required at the second time was much less than first time due to less weed intensity. During weeding, the work rest cycle for upland weeder was 60: 10 and that for Khurpi was 60:5.

Achievement/Findings:

Weeding by weeder in line sown field has definitely merit over weeding by Khurpi in broadcast field. To take the full advantage of line sowing, a weeder of good performance is essential. By using a seeder and weeder in jute cultivation. cost of weeding can easily be reduced by about 50 percent. Therefore, the use of a weeder in row crop cultivation is better in respect of capacity, human drudgery and overall cost at farmers field.
