Crop Loss Due to Weed Infestation and the Efficacy of Different Weed Control Methods in Cabbage

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Experiments were carried out at two farmers field (Baranda village) of Kashimpur union under Gazipur district during the winter season of 2000-2001 to determine the number or weeding required for maximum yield of cabbage. The cropping sequences of the selected fields Cumcumber-yardlong bean – Cabbage, and Okra – T. Aman rice – Cabbage. Treatments were: (i) One hand weeding at 15 DAT (days after transplanting), (ii) Two Hand weeding at 15 and 35 DAT, (iii) Weed free throughout the crop season, (iv) Weeded by BARI weeder at 15 DAT and one hand weeding at 35 DAT, (v) Farmers practice, (vi) Mulch by rice straw @ 8 t/ha and (vii) No weeding (control). Varieties were Atlas 70 and KK cross. Fertilizer dose was 100-60-50-4 kg of N, P₂0₅, K₂0 S and Zn / ha. Seedlings of Atlas 70 were sown on November 12, 2000 with spacing 60 cm X 50 cm in field –1 and KK Cross was sown on December 6, 2000 with a spacing of 50 cm X 50 cm in field –2. Among the weed species, Shaknotey was dominant in both the fields. Highest fresh and dry weight of weeds/m² were obtained from the control plots. Marketable yields of cabbage were significantly affected by different weed management practices in both the fields. The result showed that two hand weedings at 15 and 35 DAT would be enough to save the crop for getting maximum yield. Straw mulch practices would also be economic to control weeds if straws are available.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The experiments were carried out during the winter season of 2000-2001 at two farmer's field (Barenda village) of Kashimpur union under Gazipur district.The soil of the experimental plot belongs to Chhiata series of Grey Terrace soil. The cropping sequences of the selected fields were Cucumber- yardlong bean-Cabbage in field - 1 (Mr. Asmat) and Okra - T. Aman rice - Cabbage in field-2 (Mr. Rasid). The treatments were: T₁) One hand weeding at 15 DAE (days after emergence), T₂) Two Hand weeding at 15 & 35 DAE, T₃) Weed free throughout the crop season, T₄) Weeded by BARI weeder at 15 DAE and 1 hand weeding at 35 DAE, T₅) Farmer's practices, T₆) Straw mulch by straw and T₇) No weeding (control). The trial was set up in a RCB design with four replications. The unit plot size was 6m x 4m. The varieties of cabbage were Atlas 70 and KK cross. Seedlings of Atlas 70 were transplanted on November 12,2000 with spacing 60 cm x 50 cm in field -1 and KK cross was transplanted on December 6 with spacing 50 cm x 50 cm in field-2. The fertilizer dose was 100-60-50-4 kg of N P K and Zn/ha.
