Evaluation of Crop Establishment Techniques and Weeding Methods for Boro Rice in Boro-fallow-t. Aman Cropping Pattern.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Information about profitable crop establishment method under different weeding methods is lacking. The study was conducted at BRRI, Gazipur. Objective of this study was to fine out a cost effective establishment method and weeding technique for Boro rice in a Boro-Fallow-T.Aman cropping pattern. The experiment was conducted at the east byde BRRI experimental farms during Boro 2004-05. Result showed that irrespective of different weeding methods, hand seeded practice produced significantly higher grain yield (5.95 t/ha) followed by drum seeding 5.55 t/ha and traditional transplanting produced the lower yield (5.13 t/ha). Economic analysis showed that in Boro-Fallow-T.Aman cropping pattern, establishment of Boro rice either with drum seeder or by hand gave higher gross margin than transplanting (TP) method.

Objectives:

To fine out a cost effective establishment method and weeding technique for Boro rice in a Boro-Fallow-T.Aman cropping pattern.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the east byde BRRI experimental farms during Boro 2004-05. The design of the experiment was split with three replications where different establishment methods were in the main plot and different methods of weeding in sub plot. Three establishment methods were: direct seeding using drums seeder (S1), direct seeding by hand (S2) and Transplanting (S3) and three weeding methods were Herbicide Rifit + 1 hand weeding (W1), weeding 2 times by BRRI weeder (W2) and 2 times hand weeding (W3). Herbicide was applied @ 0.5L and 1 L/ha for irrespective seeded and transplanted rice respectively.

Achievement/Findings:

Result showed that irrespective of different weeding methods, hand seeded practice produced significantly higher grain yield 5.95 t/ha followed by drum seeding 5.55 t/ha and traditional transplanting produced the lower (5.13 t/ha). Number of filled grains per panicle and 1000- grain weight was statistically identical. The higher grain yield of direct seeded rice was associated with higher number of panicles/m². Weed dry weight was significantly higher in W2 treatment, which was weeded twice by BRRI weeder. Interaction effects were insignificant for yield contributing characters. Economic analysis showed that in Boro-Fallow-T. Aman cropping pattern, establishment of boro rice either with drums seeder or by hand higher gross margin than TP method. The variation was mainly due to higher grain yield and less variable costs incurred in direct seeding method compared to TP method.
