Yield Loss Assessment of Onion Due to Root-knot Nematode Meloidogyne Incognita Infestation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne spp, infects all commercially grown onion cultivars in Bangladesh, but its yield loss was established in the present study. The effects of different pre-plant population levels of M. incognita on onion in pots were evaluated. Onion yield decreased as the nematode population in increased with the few exception. The pre-plant inoculums density 4 g/kg soil showed more reduction of bulb yield. Bulb weight was reduced by 4.74 to 11.71% when plants were inoculated with 2 to 10 g/kg soil of root knot nematode, M. incognita infested chopped gall roots of tomato.

Objectives:

To determine the yield loss of onion by root-knot disease.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted during Rabi 2012-13, in the pot house of Plant Pathology Division BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur. Sterilized soil was used and each pot received 5 kg of soil. Five different level of preplant root knot nematode inoculum density were used which considered as treatment viz. i) Control (no nematode inoculum), ii) Inoculum density 2 g/kg soil, iii) Inoculum density 4 g/kg soil, iv) Inoculum density 6 g/kg soil, v) Inoculum density 8 g/kg soil, vi) Inoculum density 10 g/kg soil. The root knot nematode M. incognita infested chopped galled roots of tomato was used as a pre-plant nematode inoculums. The pot soils were inoculated with severely infected chopped galled roots of tomato @ 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 g/kg soil which consider as a pre-plant root knot nematode inculum density. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design (CRD) with 4 replications. Forty five days old onion seedlings CV. Bari piraz-4, grown on sterilized soils was transplanted and each pot received 5 seedlings. All intercultural operation such as fertilizers application, weeding and irrigation were done as per standard recommendation. After 120 days of transplanting, all plants from each pot were uprooted carefully without disturb the root system to collect the data. Gall index following 0-10 scale Zeck (1971) and yield were recorded.

Results of the present study indicated that onion bulb yield is decreased as the increased of nematode population except inoculums density 4 g/kg soil where more reduction of bulb yield was observed. Bulb weight was reduced by 4.74 to 11.71% when plants were inoculated with 2 to 10 g/kg soil of root knot nematode infested chopped gall roots of tomato. The maximum yield reduction 11.71% was observed when the highest initial nematode inoculums density (10 g/kg soil) was used followed by the intermediate level of pre-plant nematode inoculums density 4 g kg-1, 8 g kg-1 and 6 g kg-1 of soil of chopped gall roots of tomato, respectively were used. The minimum yield reduction 4.74% was recorded when 2 g kg-1 inoculums of soil of chopped gall roots of tomato were used. Regarding root knot nematode disease severity, it was observed that gall index value was maximum when the highest pre-plant nematode inoculums (10 g kg-1 of soil of chopped gall roots of tomato) was used followed by the preplant nematode inoculums density 4 g kg-1, 8 g kg-1 and 6 g kg-1 of soil of chopped gall roots of tomato, respectively. From the study it is observed that onion bulb yield (g bulb-1) is related to the root knot nematode disease severity which indicated that increased the root knot disease severity resulted decreased the bulb yield as a results increased the yield reduction.
