The potentiality of jute fibre is very much suitable for diversified end uses. To increase its usability by using a substituted natural fibre like Okra (Lady's Finger its scientific name is Abelmoschus esculentus)plant's fibre having physico-chemical properties comparable with jute fibre. The study was conducted at Fibre Chemistry Department, Chemistry Division, Bangladesh Jute Research Institute during 2007. The percentage of cellulose, hemicellulosem lignin content & bundle strength (lbs/mg) of Okra plant fibre were in the considerably similar range with jute fibre but brightness (%), pectin, oil & ash content were slightly higher than normal range of jute fibre. Higher percentage of brightness (%) is very important for any textile fibre and higher oil content and appreciable advantage during spinning. In combination with jute fibre (with/without modification) or alone Okra plant fibre may be a possible textile fibre if its selection become appropriate for diversified end uses.

To study  intrinsic and extrinsic properties, micro and macro properties of jute and jute products and their modifications with physical, chemical, biotechnological and other possible means.

Jute fibre (O-9897 variety) and Okra Abelmoschus esculentus (Lady's Finger) plant fibre were collected from the experimental field of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute, Dhaka. Retting condition of both fibres were almost same in all respect and collection of dry fibres as usual like jute fibre. Determination of physical properties (Brightness, Bundle strength) of Jute fibre & Okra plant fibre samples by different standard methods. Before going to chemical analysis to chemical analysis the fibres were defated by Soxhlet Extractor using Petroleum Ether. Determination of Oil/wax content was also taken by Soxhlet Extractor method. percentage estimation of chemical constituents of every sample were taken on the dry weight basis.

From the studied it was observed that cellulose, hemi-cellulose, lignin content and bundle strength of two samples were within the normal range of jute fibre but brightness(%), pectin, oil & ash contents were beyond the normal range of jute fibre. In the statement showed clearly higher percentage of brightness (%) & Oil content of the two fibre specimen indicating comparatively better quality of Okra plant fibre for sophisticated end uses by smooth spinning due to presence of higher oil content. On the other hand higher percentage of pectin & ash content as shown in the experiment, were not suitable for textile purpose due to hardness and stiffness. After removal of these sticky constituents the fibre become soft for diversified textile uses. By blending with jute or alone, Okra (Lady's Finger)plant fibre may be used as substitute textile fibre for jute fibre. It may be concluded that Okra plant fibre will be highly appreciable textile fibre in wide field of eco-friendly & value added goods in parallel with other textile fibres.
