Developing Short Duration Higher Yielding Boro Rice Materials Through Backcrossing

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A back crossing programme was carried out to make best boro modern varieties BRRI Dhan 28, BRRI Dhan 29 and BRRI Dhan 36 life cycle shorter as far as possible by incorporating short duration genes from the three Aus varieties without much reducing the yield status of each of the three high yielding boro varieties. The backcrossing program and the growing of back cross progenies were carried out through the boro seasons of 2011-12 and 2012-13 at the farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka. The F1s of the nine cross combinations were grown in boro season of 2011-12 to carry out back crosses with each of the three recurrent parents BRRI Dhan 28, BRRI Dhan 29 and BRRI Dhan 36. The backcross combination (BRRI Dhan 29 x BR 24) x BRRI Dhan 26 produced the highest grain yield per plant (28.5 g) although the days to 50% flowering was 104 and the days to maturity was 145. The earliest flowering 94 days as well as earliest days to maturity 128 days was observed in the backcross progeny (BRRI Dhan 28 x BR 21) x BRRI Dhan 28. The BC1 progenies of this backcross combination produced (23-28.5 g) grain yield per plant.

Objectives:

1. To select short duration materials of high quality boro rice to utilize them directly or in varietal improvement programme

2.To allow quicker harvest of boro rice crops with minimum damage to adverse situation.

Methodology:

Six Rice varieties (viz. 3 Aus and 3 Boro) were collected from the gene back of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Gazipur in October 2009 . The seed of the six varieties were sown in seed bed in November 2009 and seedlings were transplanted in December 2009 to know the days to flowering, anthesis period and their maturity period to utilize them efficiently in the crossing program in 2010. The seeds of the six varieties were sown in seed bed again in boro season of 2010 at 10 days interval. The plants of each variety have been selected for crossing based on their flowering characteristics. The F1s were back crossed to boro varieties BRRI Dhan 28, BRRI Dhan 29 and BRRI Dhan 36 in the following fashion - BRRI Dhan 28 x BR 21 BRRI Dhan 28 x BR 24 BRRI Dhan 28 x BR 26 BRRI Dhan 29 x BR 21 BRRI Dhan 29 x BR 24 BRRI Dhan 29 x BR 26 BRRI Dhan 36 x BR 21 BRRI Dhan 36 x BR 24 BRRI Dhan 36 x BR 26.

Achievement/Findings:

The 1st generation back cross progenies were obtained for all the nine back cross combinations. Lowest days to 50% flowering and lowest days to maturity with moderate grain yield per plant was obtained in the progenies of the back crosses with BRRI Dhan 28. The back cross progenies of the three back cross combinations when BRRI Dhan 29 was used as recurrent parent produced 50% flowering within 94 to 101 days. They also required highest days to maturity of 131-145 days and produced highest grain yield per plant (27-2805 g).
