Maximizing Agro-economic Productivity of Three-crop System by Practicing Double Transplanting for Boro Rice.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Objective of this study was to bring diversification and to increase cropping intensity with the inclusion of potato in the wet-dry transition period and also to evaluate the influence of double transplanted Boro rice on the total productivity of T. Aman–Potato-Boro cropping pattern. Economic analysis shows that in T. Aman-Potato-Double transplanted Boro rice gave 222% and 251% higher gross margin than the traditional pattern T. Aman-Follow-Boro at BRRI, Gazipur and Kapasia and 5% and 41% higher gross margin than the pattern T. Aman-Potato-Single transplanted Boro rice respectively.

Objectives:

To bring diversification and to increase cropping intensity with the inclusion of potato in the wet-dry transition period and also to evaluate the influence of double transplanted Boro rice on the total productivity of T. Aman–Potato-Boro cropping pattern.

Methodology:

Boro-Fallow-T. Aman cropping pattern is widely practiced in high and medium high land Boro there is a gap period of more about 22% of the total land area. Between T. Aman and Boro there is a gap period 0f more than 80 days which is called wet-dry transition period. It has been established that the productivity of this ecosystem could be improved by growing potato in the transition period. It has been also experienced that if there is rainfall in the second fortnight of November, the establishment of potato is delayed which subsequently force Boro transplanting in February. Thus, total productivity of the system rather decreased in lieu of increasing. Benefits from double transplanted T. Aman and low lying Boro rice is not uncommon but details information of double transplanted boro rice in Boro-T. Aman system is lacking.

Achievement/Findings:

At the BRRI farm, Gazipur, T. Aman yield ranged from 4.19 to 4.25 t/ha. Potato yielded 21.13 and 22.25 t/ha when harvested at 70 and 76 days after planting respectively. At Kapasia, T. Aman yield ranged from 5.16 to 5.68 t/ha. Potato yield 17.55 t/ha when harvested after 70 days of planting and 26.25 t/ha when harvested at full maturity. In Gazipur site, highest REY of 30.98 t/ha was obtained from pattern T. Aman- Potato-Boro followed by T. Aman-Potato- Boro and T. Aman-Fallow- Boro pattern, which gave average REY of 29.56 and 11.91 t/ha, respectively. Similar results were also obtained at Kapasia site with the highest REY of 36.14 t/ha. Economic analysis shows that in T. Aman-Potato-Double transplanted Boro rice gave 222% and 251% higher gross margin than the traditional pattern T. Aman-Follow-Boro at BRRI, Gazipur and Kapasia and 5% and 41% higher gross margin than the pattern T. Aman-Potato-Single transplanted Boro rice respectively.
