Studies of the Economic Dyeing and Finishing Process Technology for Chemicaly Modified Jute Fabric Treated with Three Types of Cross-linking Agent.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted during the year 2000-2001 at Bangladesh Jute Research Institute Dhaka, Chemical Processing Department to develop economic dyeing and cross linking technique for jute fabric/materials. For chemically modification of jute fabric three methods of cross-linking like dry, moist and wet have carried out on bleached jute fabric (CBC) using different procion M brand dyes along with three types of cross-linking agents (fixapret CPN, fixapret ECOs and indosol E-50 powder). Dye fixation, Crease recovery angle of the dyed fabrics were determined. Regarding all dyeing properties indosol E-50 powder achieved best result.

Objectives:

To develop economic dyeing and cross linking technique for jute fabric/materials

Methodology:

i. Preparation of jute fabric: Carpet breaking cloth (CBC) was desized, scoured and bleached to remove the impurities present in the fabric. Then the fabric was ready to carry out the whole experiment.

ii. Simultaneous dyeing and finishing by cross-linking method: Three cross-linking system have been selected and carried out on bleached CBC applying standard recipes with various reactive dyes along with cross-linking agents, catalysts etc. The applied cross-linking methods are- a) Dry cross-linking method, b) Moist cross-linking method, c) Wet cross-linking method.

iii. Selection of various dye: Different types of procion M-brand reactive dyes were selected.These are- Procion Red M8/B,Procion Yellow M4R/MX3G, Procion Blue MX2R & Procion Turquoise MXG.

iv. Cross linking agents: Two reactive groups have been used as cross-linking agents. a)Fixapret CPN & Fixapret Ecos, Poly functional compound (DMDHEU) of BASF products and b)Indosol E-50 powder (sandoz)

v)Catalyst: Magnesium Chloride was used in this method. After dyeing by cross-linking methods the fabric were tested for determination of dye fixation, dye uniformity, crease recovery angle etc. by standard method.

Achievement/Findings:

It has been observed that in exhaust dyeing method the color yield of some dyes like reactive or direct dyes containing dichlorotriazynil or nucleophillic groups ranges from 60-80%,i.e. up to Ca 40% of dye may be in course of dyeing. But there is little loss in cross-linking method if proper technique is to be carried out.A trifunctional cross-linking agent and mono functional dye can be yield high degree of fixation under suitable condition. The cross-linking agents containing two or more reactive groups capable of forming stable chemical bonds with both the cellulose and dye under alkali or acidic conditions which results high color yield i.e. color will not be washed out from the fabric. But in some cases jute fabric might loss tensile strength to a grade extent due to brittleness of fiber when curing at higher temperature. In that case moist cross-linking method is to be preferred. The dye fixation and other properties are satisfactory in the case of wet cross-linking method.
