Validation Trial on the Integrated Management of Foot & Rot and Wilt Diseases of Chickpea

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The field experiments were conducted in, BARI, Gazipur and Regional Agricultural Research Station, Rahmatpur, Barisal as well as in the farmers field at Ishurdi, Jessore, Madaripur and Barisal during 2012-2013. The developed technology, poultry refuse + seed treated with Provax + Bavitin (2.5 g kg-1 seed) and soil drenching with Provax + Bavistin (@ 2.5 /L-1 twice) for the integrated management of foot & root rot and wilt diseases of chickpea was tested. The integrated disease management technology was found to be effective against the foot & root rot and wilt diseases of chickpea which also increased the yield of chickpea in all the locations.

Objectives:

To validate the integrated diseased management practice against foot and root rot and wilt diseases of chickpea.

Methodology:

The validation trials were conducted at research field of Plant Pathology Division, BARI, Joydebpur and farmers field at Ishurdi, Jessore, Madaripur and Barisal during 2012-13. The developed technology poultry refuse + seed treated with Provax + Bavitin (2.5 g kg^-1 seed) and soil drenching with Provax + Bavistin (@2.5g L-1 twice) for integrated management of foot & root rot and wilt diseases of chickpea was applied at Ishurdi, Jessore and Rahmatpur, Barisal where as at Joydebpur and Madaripur control treatment was taken for comparison. The unit plot size was 1 bigha and spacing was 40 cm x 5 cm. The lentil variety was used BARI Chola 5 at Joydebpur, Madaripur Ishurdi and Jessore and BARI Chola-9 at Rahmatpur, Barisal. Seeds were sown on 2nd week of November 2012. Poultry refuse applied @ 5t ha^-1 before 21 days of seed sowing and was properly mixed with soil and frequently irrigated for completely decomposed in the soil. Seed was treated with Provax- 200 WP at the time of seed sowing and soil was drenched at seedling and vegetative stage. Intercultural operations were done as per needed. During the growing period the plots were inspected regularly to record the incidence of foot and root rot disease from seedling to maturity stage of the crop. Dead plants were removed from the field after counting. Disease plant parts were collected in laboratory for identifying foot and root rot pathogens. Data were recorded on foot and root rot and yield.

Achievement/Findings:

Foot & root rot and wilt disease incidence was drastically reduced by the treatment in almost all the locations. At Joydebpur, foot & root rot and wilt disease incidence was higher (28.98%) in control treatment where it was drastically reduced (Only 8.97%) due to application of integrated treatment. At Madaripur significantly higher foot and root rot disease incidence 23% was observed in the control plot as well as in the farmer field while lower foot and root rot disease incidence 10% was recorded in the treated plot. Regarding the yield of chickpea, considerably higher yield was obtained from the validation trial filed in all the locations At Joydebpur, considerably higher yield 1946 kg ha-1 was obtained in the treated plot where in the control plot the yield was 1069 kg ha-1. At Joydebpur, application integrated disease management technology resulted 45.07% higher yield compared to control. At Madaripur, the highest yield 2391 kg/ha were obtained from the treated plot followed by non-treated plot 1527 kg ha^-1 and the lowest yield was recorded from the farmer filed 1258 kg ha^-1 . At Madaripur the integrated disease management technology gave 47.39% higher yield compared to farmer practices. Considering other location the trial, higher yield was 1875 kg ha^-1 was harvested from the farmers field at Ishurdi followed by farmers field at Jessore 1570 kg ha^-1 but comparatively lower yield 1153 kg/ha and 1013 kg ha^-1 were recorded from RARS research field and farmers field at Barisal. .
