Farmers’ Participatory Validation and Evaluation of Photosensitive Modern Rice Varieties/breeding Lines Under Boro-t.aman Cropping Pattern for Medium Highland Phase-2.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Objective of this study was to determine the farmers’ participatory validation and evaluation of photosensitive modern rice varieties/breeding lines under Boro-T.Aman cropping pattern. The experiments conducted at FSR & D site, Kapasia revealed that the productivity of this ecosystem could be increased by growing photosensitive MVs instead of the local T. Aman, Horafdi. Productivity of BRRI dhan28-Horafdi pattern (existing pattern) was compared with the productivity of other tested patterns. Inclusion of BR22, BR23 & BR5226-6-3-2 after BRRI dhan28, gave yield advantages of 0.84, 1.25 &1.40 t/ha respectively, which gave 16, 26 & 31% higher gross margins compared to farmers existing pattern.

Objectives:

To determine the farmers’ participatory validation and evaluation of photosensitive modern rice varieties/breeding lines under Boro-T.Aman cropping pattern.

Methodology:

Farmers usually grow low yielding photosensitive T.Aman varieties in the medium high land (phase-2) after Boro rice, which results in low production. The experiments conducted at FSR & D site, Kapasia revealed that the productivity of this ecosystem could be increased by growing photosensitive MVs instead of the local T. Aman, Horafdi. With this view, BR22, BR23 and breeding line BR5226-6-3-2 along with Horafdi (check) were demonstrated in five farmer’s fields of anjab, Nabipur & Uttarhkamer blocks of Kapasia Upazila under Gazipur district.

Agro-economic productivity of T.Aman (late planted)-Boro cropping pattern that are presented an average of two blocks. Nabipur block was damaged due to submergence of floodwater. Productivity of BRRI dhan28-Horafdi pattern (existing pattern) was compared with the productivity of other tested patterns. Inclusion of BR22, BR23 & BR5226-6-3-2 after BRRI dhan28, gave yield advantages of 0.84, 1.25 &1.40 t/ha respectively, which gave 16, 26 & 31% higher gross margins compared to farmers existing pattern.
