A field trial was carried out in the farmers' field of Rangpur, Bogra and Munsigoanj and BARI, Joydebpur experimental plot to evaluate twenty five fungicides against late blight of potato during 2009-2010. All the used fungicides have been found to reduce foliar infection compared to control. Plot treated with Jazz 80 WP showed highest disease reduction (93.0%) followed by Mozard 80 WP (90.66% ), Nikizeb 80WP (86.6%), Mouzeb 80 WP (85.3 %), BGM-45 80 WP (85.33%), Topcil 72 WP (86.6% ), E-zeb 80WP (89.33%), Metagold 35 WP (84.0%), R-Metalyxyl 72 WP (84.0%), Zee mil (84.0%), Kencozeb (84.0%), Bleezeb (80.0%), Bicojan 70WP (84.0%), Agrifos 400EC (80%) and M-Metalyxyl (80.0%). Ridomil Gold and Secure were used as check fungicides but Ridomil Gold (73.3%) did not found to be effective against late blight disease. Secure gave lowest tuber yield (16.5 t/ha) but reduction of incidence of late blight was 92%. Agrifos showed effectivety both in reducing foliar infection and enhanced highest tuber yield (24.2 t/ha) compared to all other treatment.

To evaluate some new fungicides against late blight in the late planted potato field condition in the Northern part of Bangladesh.

The field experiments were carried out in the farmer's field at Rangpur, Bogra and Munshiganj and BARI, Joydebpur experimental plot during 2009-2010. Similar experimental design and layout was followed at every location of field trial. The susceptible potato variety Granola was planted on 15th, 20th November,10th 20th, December 2009 at Munsigoanj, Bogra, Joydebpur and Rangpur, respectfully, where unit plot size was 3 m X 4 m and spacing was 50 cm X 20 cm. RCBD design was used followed with three replications. Recommended doses of fertilizer were used and other agronomic practices were done properly. Twenty five fungicides were evaluated along with currently two of recommended fungicides Ridomil gold (mancozeb and metalaxyl) and Secure (fenamidon and mancozeb) as check. One control treatment was maintained with plain water spraying. Spraying of chemicals was started 25 days after sowing and 4 sprays were done at 10 day interval at each location. Late blight occurrence was only found at Rangpur (Mithapukur) and few at Munshiganj (Sirajde khan) farmer's field. All the fungicides used in this trial were sprayed as protectant before late blight is established. Data were recorded on percent foliage infection and tuber yield and analyzed statistically. Percent disease reduction and yield increased over control were estimated. Disease and yield parameters were recorded from Rangpur and Munshiganj crop field but only yield data was taken from Bogra and Joydebpur location. Finally, data from all four locations were averaged and statistically analyzed.

Effect of different fungicides on late blight incidence and yield of potato during experimental period. All fungicides applied significantly reduced foliage infection (P=0.05). Plot treated with Jazz 80 WP and the Mozard 8WP showed the highest disease reduction (93.0 & 90.0 %) followed by E-zeb (89.33 %), Nikizeb (86.6 %), Topcil (86.6 %), Mouzeb (85.3 %), and BGM (85.3 %) respectfully. Tuber yields were significantly increased in the entire fungicides treated plot compared to control. The highest tuber yield was found 24.2 t/ha and yield increased over control was 195.12 % with the fungicide Agrifos 400EC. The lowest tuber yield (16.4 t/ha) was obtained with the fungicide Cuprofix. Ridomil gold and Secure were used as check fungicide but Ridomil was not very effective (73.3%) against late blight. This might be due to the indiscriminate use of metalaxyl (Ridomil) fungicide in potato crops throughout the country over several years. The existence of metalaxyl resistant strains of P. infestation was confirmed in 1995-96 by monitoring of isolates. The existence of metalaxyl resistant strains in the country brings about the alarming possibility of more aggressive strain of P. infestans evolving. The fungicide, Secure reduced disease severity (92 %) however, tuber yield was lower (16.5 t/ha) as compared to other fungicides. All the treatments resulted significantly higher control of late blight, and total tuber yield as compared to control. Several chemicals mostly macozeb group viz. Jazz 80 WP (93.3 %), Mozard 80 WP (90.66 ), Nikizeb 80WP (86.6), Mouzeb 80 WP (85.3 %), BGM-45 80 WP (85.33%), Topcil 72 WP (86.6% ), E-zeb 80WP (89.33%), Metagold 35 WP (84.0%), R-Metalyxyl 72 WP (84.0%), Zee mil (84.0%), Kencozeb (84.0%), Bleezeb (80.0%), Bicojan 70WP (84.0%) Agrifos 400 EC and M-Metalyxyl (80.0%) showed good performance protecting foliar infection of potato.
