Integrated Management of Root-knot Nematode of Country Bean with Organic Soil Amendments and Nematicide

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the pre plant soil treatment with nematicide and organic soil amendments to control root knot nematode of country bean. Root knot nematode (Meloidogyne spp) infested soils were treated with Furadan 5G, poultry refuse, mustard oil cake and their combination like poultry refuse+ Furadan 5G and mustard oil cake+ Furadan 5G. All the treatments gave satisfactory reduction of gall development on roots and increased plant growth of country bean. Among the treatments, poultry refuse alone and its combination with nematicide appeared to be the best amendments for root knot nematode reduction and improvement of plant growth of country bean.

Objectives:

To evaluate two organic soil amendments poultry refuse and mustard oil cake along with a chemical nematicide Furadan (Carbofuran) in controlling the root-knot nematodes in country bean.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during Rabi 2009-10, at the experimental field of Plant Pathology Division. The field was well prepared with power tiller and prepared raised pit with keeping 1.5 m distance from pit to pit. There were 8 treatments and these were; i) Control, ii) Furadan (F) 5G @ 40gm/pit iii) Poultry refuse (PR) @ 3 kg/pit iv) Poultry refuse @ 1.5 kg/pit v) Poultry refuse @ 1.5 kg/pit+ Furadan 5G @ 20 gm/pit vi) Mustard oil cake (MOC) @ 100 gm/pit vii) Mustard oil cake @ 50 gm/pit viii) Mustard oil cake @ 50 gm/pit+ Furadan 5G @ 20 gm/pit. RCDB design was followed with 6 replications. Poultry refuse and mustard oil cake were applied three weeks before seed sowing and were incorporated with the soil properly for well decomposition. The nematicide Furadan 5G was applied at the time of seed sowing. The root-knot nematode infected roots of tomato and country bean were collected from nematode sick bed and cut into pieces and used as inoculum @ 20g/pit. The seeds of country bean variety BARI Shem-2 were sown in the pits and each pit received 10 seeds. Sixty days after germination, 5 seedlings were uprooted to observe gall in early stage. Four seedlings in each pit were kept to grow until harvest of fruits and to collect final data. Data collection: The following data were recorded by standard procedures. i) Length of shoot (cm)/plant ii) Fresh weight of shoot (gm)/plant iii) Length of root (cm)/plant iv) Gall index (0-10 scale) (Zeck, 1971) at 60 days after seed sowing and at final harvesting stage

Achievement/Findings:

The effect of organic soil amendments and nematicide on the growth of country bean plants and suppression of root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita. It is observed that all treatments have statistically significant effect on the growth of country bean and root-knot nematode suppression. The highest plant growth in terms of shoot length and weight were recorded when poultry refuse (@ 3 kg/pit) alone or in combination with Furadan 5G (PR 1.5 kg/pit+Furadan 20 gm/pit) were used and the lowest was resulted from control treatment where soil amendment was not used. Mustard oil cake alone or in combination with Furadan 5G also significantly increased growth of country bean compared to control. The highest gall indices values (3.96 at 60 days and 4.92 at harvest) were observed from control treatment. The treatment which received only Furadan 5G suppresses nematode disease incidence significantly but failed to achieve the highest reduction.
