Characterization of Deshi Jute (corchorus Capsularis) Germplasm Collected from Different Sources in 2005

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Jute Agriculture Experimental Station, Manikganj to characterize of eleven accessions of deshi jute collected from different sources were sown on 28 March, 2005 along with the check varieties CVL-1 and CC-45. The experiment was sown in a mini plot of 3 meter length of 5 rows for each accession. Row to row distance was 30 and plant to plant distance was 5-6 cm in rows. The unit plot size was 3m x 1.2 m for each accession and plot to plot distance was 1 meter. Pigmentation data were collected at 60 days after sowing. Plants were harvested at 120 days after sowing and post harvest data were collected. The accessions were characterized for their morph-agronomic attributes as per Corchorus descriptor. Based on the major yield contributing characters viz. technical height, leaf angle, leaf length, leaf width, petiole length, node number, base diameter of stem, middle diameter of stem, top diameter of stem, core diameter, dry fiber weight and dry stick weigh accessions 3914, 3917, 4683 and 3311 performed better in most of the cases than the control varieties CVL-1 and CC-45.

Objectives:

To characterize some of deshi jute germplasm as per Corchorus Descriptor for their morpho-agronomic attributes.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Jute Agriculture Experimental Station, Manikganj in 2005. Eleven accessions of deshi jute germ plasm collected from different sources along with check variety CVL-1 and CC-45 were sown on 28 March, 2005. The materials under study were 3311, 3410, 3914, 3917, 4374, 4484, 4536, 4683, 4820, 5095 and 5134. The unit plot size for each accession was 5 rows of 3 m length, spacing 30 cm between rows and 5-7 cm between plants and 1 m between plots. Standard cultural practices were followed. Pigmentation data on stem color, leaf color, vain color, petiole color, stipule color, bud color, and fruit color were collected at 60 days after sowing. Plants were harvested at 120 days after sowing and post harvest data on plant height, node number, base diameter of stem, middle diameter of stem, top diameter of stem, core diameter, dry fiber weight and dry stick weight were collected. The data were analyzed following standard statistical procedure.
