An experiment was conducted at the FSRD site, Elenga, Tangail during 2010-11 to improve the existing cropping pattern Mustard (Tori-7)-Boro (BRRI dhan 29)-T.aman (BR11) for higher yield and economic return. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with six replications. Improved cropping pattern Mustard (BARI Sarisha-15)-Boro (BRRI dhan 29)-T.aman (BRRIdhan-33, BRRI dhan-39, BINAdhan-7 or BR-11) was tested against the existing pattern. The highest grain yield was obtained from BR-11 (4.70 t/ha) which was at par with BINA dhan-7 (4.55 t/ha) and lowest yield (3.96 t/ha) was obtain from BRRI dhan-33. Higher gross returns and gross margins were obtained where BRRI dhan-33 (Tk.2,83,160 ha-1 and Tk. 1,53,814 ha-1), BRRI dhan-39 (Tk.2,91,100 ha-1 and 1,61,754.50 ha-1) and BINA dhan-7 (Tk.3,09,290 ha-1 and Tk. 1,79,984 ha-1) were cultivated followed by BARI Sarisha 15 and BRRI dhan 29. But very poor gross return and gross margin (Tk.2,43,060 ha-1 and Tk.1,41,964.50 ha-1) were incurred where BR-11 was grown.

To improve the existing cropping pattern Mustard (Tori-7)-Boro (BRRI dhan 29)-T.aman (BR11) for higher yield and economic return.

The trial was conducted at the FSRD site, Elenga, Tangail during 2010-11 to improve the existing cropping pattern Mustard-Boro-T.aman for higher yield and economic return. Improved cropping pattern Mustard (BARI sarisha-15)-Boro (BRRIdhan-29)-T.aman ((BRRIdhan -33/39 and BINA dhan-7) was tested against Mustard (Tori-7)-Boro (BRRI dhan-29)-T.aman (BR-11) cropping pattern. For T.aman rice, four varieties viz. BRRI dhan-33, BRRI dhan-39, BINA dhan-7 and BR-11 were transplanted during 5-13 August 2010. Two Mustard variety viz, BARI sharisha-15 and Tori-7 was considered. After harvest of T.aman rice BARI sarisha-15 was sown in the plots where BRRI dhan-33, BRRI dhan-39 and BINA dhan-7 were grown. But due to long duration of BR-11 and subsequently the harvesting was late (27 days), mustard variety BARI sarisha-15 was not possible to cultivate. As such the plot remained fallow. The seeds of mustard were sown on 15-16 November, 2010 after harvest of BRRI dhan-33, BRRI dhan-39 and BINA dhan-7. Mustard was harvested during 12-14 February, 2011. BRRI dhan-29 was transplanted during 6-14 February 2011. Boro rice, BRRI dhan-29 was harvested during 18-25 May, 2011. Recommended fertilizer packages and application methods were used for all the three crops. Irrigation, pest management and other intercultural operations were also done as and when necessary. The data on yield, yield components and economics of all the three crops were recorded and analyzed statistically.

Modern T.aman rice varieties matured 24-28 days earlier compared to BR-11. The highest grain yield was obtained from BR-11 (4.70 t/ha) which was at par with BINA dhan-7 (4.55 t/ha). The lowest yield was from BRRI dhan-33 (3.96 t/ha). The highest yield in BR-11 might be due to longer growth duration of crop where more photosynthate was accumulated. Mustard (BARI Sarisha-15 and Tori-7) was sown in its’ optimum sowing time frame after harvest of BRRI dhan-33, BRRI dhan-39 and BINA dhan-7 and production were 1540 kg/ha and 885 kg/ha, respectively. But due to long duration (153 days) of BR-11, mustard cultivation was not possible. As such the plot was fallow. The average yield performance of BRRI dhan-29 obtained from all the three plots was 6.08 t/ha. Cost and return analysis indicated that higher gross returns and gross margins were obtained where BRRI dhan-33 (Tk.2,83,160 ha-1 and Tk. 1,53,814 ha-1), BRRI dhan-39 (Tk.2,91,100 ha-1 and 1,61,754.50 ha-1) and BINA dhan-7 (Tk.3,09,290 ha-1 and Tk. 1,79,984 ha-1) were cultivated followed by BARI shrisha-9-and BRRI dhan-29. But very poor gross return and gross margin (Tk.2,43,060 ha-1 and Tk.1,41,964.50 ha-1) were incurred where BR-11 was grown. The gross returns and gross margins were also poor where Tori-7 was included after harvest of BRRI dhan-33 (Tk.2,59,025 ha-1 and 1,35,808 ha-1), BRRI dhan-39 (Tk.2,66,965 ha-1 and 1,43,748.50 ha-1) and BINA dhan-7 (Tk.2,77,035 ha-1 and 1,53,818.50 ha-1).
