Development of Profitable Potato+ Maize Inter Cropping System.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Objective of this study was to identify optimum planting time maize and potato harvesting in potato and maize inter cropping system for maximizing total productivity. Significantly highest PEY (20.1 t/ha) was obtained from T3 treatment where potato was harvested at 80 days after planting (DAP) and maize planted on December 10 after 30 days of potato seeding. Significantly lower PEY were obtained from sole maize plot (T9 and T8) when maize was planted on December 10 and November 25,2004 respectively.

Objectives:

To identify optimum planting time maize and potato harvesting in potato and maize inter cropping system for maximizing total productivity.

Methodology:

The experimental design was RCB with three replications. The total productivity of inter cropping system was compared in terms of potato equivalent yield, which differed significantly among the treatments. Maize is an emerging highly profitable cash crop. Potato is also a profitable crop with high yield potential and is the major vegetable in the diet of Bangladesh people. Under normal situation, planting time of both crops coincides if they are grown during season. In many cases, inter cropping has been the potential of exploiting natural resources for higher total productivity may be an alternative option for maximizing productivity. Optimum time and geometry of planting are the means of improving of inter cropping by reducing inter crop competition. But information on optimum planting time of maize as an inter crop with potato and potato harvesting time are lacking.
