Performance of T.aman and Boro Rice Under Double Transplanting as Influenced by Spacing and Age of First Planted Crop in Boro-fallow-t.aman Cropping Pattern

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Objective of this study was to obtain benefit of growing season during Aman season and for Boro rice of low-lying areas. This study was conducted in factorial RCB design with three replications. Three different ages of 1st transplanted crop were 45 days (A₁), 35 days (A₂) and 25 days (A₃) and four spacing (cm x cm) were 15 x 15 (S₁), 20 x 10 (S₂), 20 x 15 (S₃)& 20 x 20 (S₄). Forty days old seedlings raised in a wet bed method were transplanted in treatment A₁, A₂ & A₃. Grain yield was significantly affected by spacing. 20 x 10 cm spacing produced significantly highest yield (5.39 t/ha) but comparable to 15 x 15 cm. Grain yield was decreased with increasing spacings and significantly lowest obtained 20 x20 cm. The highest grain yield was attributed to higher number of panicles/m². The interaction effect was insignificant.

Farmers used to practice double transplanting,to obtain benefit of growing season during Aman season and for Boro rice of low-lying areas. But information on duration of crop under 1st transplanting and optimum plant spacing in the main field is lacking. Therefore, the study has been undertaken to compare the performance of double transplanted Aman and Boro rice under different spacings in the main field at double transplanting and age of 1st planted crop in Boro-Fallow-T.Aman cropping pattern.

Achievement/Findings:

Irrespective of spacings, panicle/m2, weight of 100 grains and grain yield were significantly different. Crop duration of 45 days (A₁) produced significantly higher grain yield (5.23 t/ha), which was statistically similar to that of 35 days (A₂). Lower field duration (25 days) for 1st transplanted crop and 35-day crop gave comparable yields. Higher grain yield was associated with higher number of panicles/m².
