Genetic Variation and Path Analysis in Safflower (carthamus Tinctorius L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Variability, correlation and path coefficient analysis were studied for nine yield and yield components in safflower. Considerable genotypic coefficient of variations were found for seed yield per plant. Secondary branches per plant, seeds per capitulum, plant height, primary branches per plant, capitulum per plant and 1000-seed weight. High heritability was observed for days to flower followed by days to maturity and 1000-seed weight where as moderately high heritability was estimated for plant height and seed yield per plant. Except days to flower and days to maturity all other characters had moderate to high genetic advance. At the genotypic level, seed yield was significantly and positively correlated with seeds per capitulum only hut was negatively associated with days to flower. Path analysis revealed that seeds per capitulum, 1000-seed weight and plant height had substantial direct effects on seed yield per plant.

Objectives:

To find out the genetic variability among various important traits and their associations relating to seed yield of Safflowe

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Hathazari, Chittagong of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BAR I) during rabi season, 1988-89. The eighteen genotypes were evaluated in a randomized complete block design with four replications.Unit plot size was 1.2 x 5 Ill. A distance of 30 cm was maintained between rows and 5 cm between plants. Data from 10 randomly selected plants of middle rows of each plot were recorded on plant height (PH). number of primary branches per plant (PBP), number of secondary branches per plant (SBP), number of capitulum per plant (CP), seeds per capitulum (SC) 1000-seed weight (SW) and seed yield pCI' plant (SYP). Days to flower (DF) amd maturity (DM) were recorded on plot basis. Genotypic (GCV) and phenotypic (PCV) coefficient of variation were computed according to Burton (1952). Broad sense heritability (H) and genetic advance (GA) in percentage of mean were estimated using the methods of Johnson et al. (1955). Genotypic and phenotypic correlation coefficients were computed using the formula suggested by Al-Jibouri et al. (1958) while path- coefficients analysis was done according to the method proposed by Dewey and Lu (1959).

In conclusion, results from the present investigation suggested that greater emphasis should be given on seeds per capitulum. 1000-seed weight and plant height while constructing a selection scheme for further improvement of safflower.
