Performance of Red Chittagong Cattle in Bangladesh Agricultural University Dairy Farm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Red Chittagong is WI important indigenous cattle genetic resource of Bangladesh localized in the Chittagong area. The morphological characteristics, productive and reproductive performance and semen characteristics of Red Chittagong (RC) cattle were studied. The study was undertaken at the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) Dairy Farm and Artificial Insemination (AI) Center during 1995 to 2000. The cattle were red coat colored with pale red muzzle and hoof. The average length height and heart girth of adult female cows were 114.34. 107.71 and 139.85 cm respectively. In case of adult bull these measurements were 134. 125 and 168 cm respectively. The average birth weight of male and female calves was 17.24 and 16.0 kg respectively. Growth rate of female calves up to 120 days was 0.19 kg per day, number of services per conception 1.25, gestation period 287 days, lactation length 261.08 days, lactation yield 661.16 liters, average daily milk yield 2.55 liters, calving interval 409.9 days, semen volume per ejaculate 3.25 ml, sperm concentration 1247.72 million/ml, live sperm content 80.91% and normal sperm content 82.24 % were found. The results indicated that the productive and reproductive performance of RC cattle were better than other non-descript indigenous cattle of Bangladesh. The study further revealed an obvious need for more research and objective information about this type of indigenous cattle in order to justify a conservation and improvement program to he undertaken.

Objectives:

To evaluate the RC cattle of Bangladesh

Methodology:

The study was conducted at BAU Dairy Farm and Artificial Insemination (AI) Center on productive and reproductive performances of cows, bulls and the progenies of RC cattle during the periods from 1995 to 2000. Three aspects of RC cattle such as morphological characters, productive and reproductive traits and semen characteristics were studied. The morphological characters were body shape, size, conformation. coat color, and other distinguishable features. Productive and reproductive traits were birth weight, growth rate, number of services per conception, gestation length, lactation length, lactation yield, daily milk yield and calving interval. Among semen characteristics of bull, volume per ejaculate, sperm concentration and percentage of live and normal sperm counts were considered. Data were obtained from animals of varying ages and sexes. For analysis, both simple descriptive statistics as well as completely randomized design with unequal sample sizes were used.

From the results of this study, it is apparent that the RC cattle are distinct from other indigenous cattle of Bangladesh. The productive and reproductive performances of RC cattle were better than other non-descript indigenous cattle available in Bangladesh. Because of their distinct phenotype, small size and better performance it is justified to undertake a conservation and improvement program for them. However, further studies with reasonable sample sizes may be necessary before designing an optimum breeding improvement strategy with the said RC cattle of Bangladesh. It is observed that the RC cattle are self - sustainable in their breeding tract due to their adaptability to the agro -climatic conditions, their survivability under low input system prevailing in Chittagong district. These animals are still available in sizeable population in the remote areas of Chittagong area where artificial insemination (Artificial Insemination) could not yet intervene. Therefore, there is a need for a genetic improvement program in Red Chittagong cattle in farmers herds in order to make smallholder dairy farming more profitable at the subsistence farming level.
