Examine the Physical Characters of Jute Fabrics of Different Construction and Weight.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

With an aim of developing new products with improved construction and to enhance export potential, physical and mechanical characteristics of industrial jute products viz., carpet backing cloth (5 oz/yd), hessian (7 oz/yd) and hessian (10 oz/yd) as well as fabric from twist less yarn produced by TNO, Holland were studied according to standard methods and were displayed in a table. All the fabrics were of fairly uniform plain weave structures. Actual counts of both warp and weft yarns along with the cloth strengths, warp- wise and weft-wise, of all the fabrics varied widely. Of all the samples counts of twistless warp yarns were higher than that of its weft yarn. Bending length and its subsequent flexural rigidity, cloth strength, cover factor of the fabrics from twist less yarn were found to be much higher than those of the rest of three fabric samples. CBC though had least cover factor had higher cloth strength than the two hessian samples.

Objectives:

1. To examine the physical characteristics of industrial jute products and to develop new product with improved construction to enhance export potential.

2. To assess the quality of the products produced in different jute mills of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Fabrics of twist less yarn produced by TNO Holland was collected from BJMC and CBC (5oz/yd), hessian (7 oz/yd), and hessian (10 oz/yd) were collected from Adamjee Jute mills Limited. The different physical (ends per inch, picks per inch, waarp and weft jute count, weight g/square meter, twist per inch, cloth strength lb/inch, yarn strength in lb, stiffness, bending length, flexural rigidity, extension of yarn, cloth cover factor, cloth abrasion factor in warp and weft wise) and mechanical characters of these samples were studied according to British Standard methods during the 1981 in the Physics and testing Division of BJRI.

From the result it can be said that the actual counts of both warp and weft yarns of each fabric vary widely, so did the cloth strength , except in the case of twist less yarn made fabric which gave the values of their yarn counts and fabrics strength within reasonable limit. Of all the samples the count of warp yarns the twists less fabrics were higher than its weft counts, but in case of CBC and 10 oz/yd hessian cloth reverse was in the case. And for 7 oz/yd hessian cloth the counts of warp and weft yarns were same. The percentage of warp way yarn extension for the first three samples were greater than their weft way yarn extension and in the case of fourth sample the weft way yarn extension was higher than its warp way extension. The bending length as well as the flexural rigidity of twist less fabrics was much greater than the rest of three samples. Although CBC was much lighter than other two hessian samples, it showed higher value of stiffness, cloth strength in the warp way direction. The cloth cover factor and cloth strength of the twist less fabrics were highest among four samples. The cloth resistance factors of all samples were greater than unity except in case of CBC and hessian 7 oz/yd which were nearly equal to unity.
