Genetic Divergence in Grain Sorghum (sorghum Bicolor (l) Moench)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Genetic divergence was assessed in 34 genotypes or sorghum using Mahalanobis's D² statistic tor nine charcters including yield. The population was grouped into tour dusters. Cluster II was large and consisted half of the total population. Effective tillers, grains per panicle and grain weight were mainly responsible lor genetic divergence. Clusters with small statistical distances were considered less diverse than those with large distances. Based on inter cluster distance and other desirable characters like high yield potential and earliness. the prospective parents viz, G-001, G-002, G-007, G-018, G-019, G-021, G-024 and G-028 have been selected from different clusters for hybridization programme. The genotypes belonging to cluster I were found genetically diverse and also possessed high yield potential and as such could be crossed, with genotypes belonging to cluster II, lII and IV. Crosses could also be made between the genotypes of cluster, II and Ill for evolving high yielding and early maturing varieties.

Objectives:

To asses the extent of genetic diversity in 34 sorghum genotypes collected from different parts of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Thirty four sorghum genotypes selected from the germplasm collection maintained at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur were grown during rabi, 1994. The trial was conducted in a randomized complete block design with three replications Each genotype was grown in 2 rows of 4 m length with a spacing of 60 cm between rows and 30 cm between plants. Observations were recorded on five randomly selected plants from each plot for nine characters namely days to 50% flowering (DF), days to maturity (DM), plant height in cm (PH), effective tillers per plant (TP), panicle length in cm (PL), number of grains per panicle (GP), grain Weight in gram (GW), yield per panicle in gram (YP) and grain yield per plant in gram (GY) Plot means over replications were used for the statistical analysis. Genetic diversity was studied following Mahalanobis's (1936) generalized distance (D²) extended by Rao (1952). Tocher's method (Rao, 1952) was followed for determining the group constellations. Statistical analysis were done using GENSTAT 5 programme.

Achievement/Findings:

Such results indicate that these characters contributed maximum towards divergence of the genotypes. It is encouraging that the greater divergence in the present material due to the characters like productive tillers per plant. number of grains per panicle and grain yield per plant will offer a good scope for improvement of yield through rational selection. The major contribution of these characters to genetic divergence was well confirmed by their cluster mean. where the range for grain number and grain weight were very wide indicating the major role of these characters in different at inter cluster level. The cluster mean for grain number was 1623 for cluster III and 41 n for cluster I with a difference of almost three times. This was also confirmed by the largest inter cluster distance between these two clusters.
